I took my 360 apart to replace a failed drive (it was the benQ version). I am just making sure that I can order a new one of the same version and just plug it in.

You NEED the drive key from the old benq drive to flash to your replacement drive in order for the 360 to play games. Without it, you'll only be able to play movies. There are tutorials on here regarding this. If the DVD circuit board is still good, you could just buy a replacement drive and switch out the boards. That would keep you from having to flash the new drive.

To swap boards you would need to desolder the old board and resolder it into the new drive.

No no. The key is on the board. You either have to

- leave the boards alone and read the key from the old board and flash it to the new board.

or

- desolder the old board from the old drive and solder the old board in to the new drive.

wow, solder a key? LOL. Just dump the firmware and spoof to the new drive.
