Mourners hold 'funeral' for Internet Explorer 6

article published on 4 March, 2010

Aten Design Group, a design firm in Colorado has hosted a "funeral" today for the aged web browser Internet Explorer 6, which is quickly being thrown out in favor of faster, safer browsers, including its descendants IE7 and IE8. The service will have a coffin with a dummy inside with an IE6 logo for its head. Anyone who attends is welcome to eulogize the browser with memories, good or bad. ... [ read the full article ]

Now that's hilarious! The only thing I have to thank IE6 for is forcing me to find an alternative browser...that's when I met Firefox. IE's long history of problems and lack of innovation pushed me away from it quickly...

The real nail in the coffin (pun intended) is coming next week when Google pulls all IE6 support from its Google family of sites, including Docs and Gmail. YouTube will drop support within a month.
Is YouTube 100% dropping support? From what I read that only applied to "new features" and that watching videos was still possible on IE6, it just has a nag screen like in this picture.

I've used IE since I was a kid. Microsoft forced me find something better in 2001 and that better is Firefox. I'm still using it and have tried for years to have my recently late wife to switch but she was always adamant on the "IE" is better.
I work in a hospital and the IT department still runs IE6 and will not upgrade to anything new or different. Are they in for a rude awakening.
What should happen now is ALL versions of IE should be laid to rest and Windows should have a new default browser called Firefox.

IE6 carcass should have been bulldozed into an unmarked graved. Unfortunately it's stenched still lives on all it's descendants.

The body should have been hung by the feet and burned, while muslims chuck shoes at it.

Never use it much. I used Netscape for the longest time, then moved to Firefox. Never liked IE at all.

when I code my new site guess what.. any non compliant browser will be kicked with a message about running insecure crap.. and I can do that easily. Sad for anybody using firefox with the identifier string set to IE .. but that's just tough crap.. because I don't need the traffic and it's a matter of principle..

As for these "mourners" .. I would have kicked them down the same hole with their beloved crapware.

Seems a bit silly to intentionaly kick browsers just because they are junk. If someone wants to use IE6 with windows 2000 SP1 and no AV software, then what business is it of mine? Sure, stop testing with IE6 and stop writing custom scripts and addons for IE6, but don't kill all connections just because someone is using IE6 (or a browser that claims to be IE6).

I bet you are one of those users that still uses Netscape 4.78 browsers. Netscape died many years ago and it's now IE6 turn. I hated building web pages that needed to be compatible for Netscape and only work on IE6.

Now with web 2.0 technology using Ajax, I hate building web pages that needed to be compatible with IE6, while working great on IE8, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera, etc.

I wish I could have attended the funeral, I would have some words that I would have loved to express... haha

No, I use the latest firefox, except when I need the abilities of Internet Explorer.

I'm not saying that you should write pages for IE6, I'm just saying that if your site happens to work with it (even if not very well), there is no reason to block internet explorer 6.

I agree that there is no reason to flat-out block IE6 users.

Not testing it is fine, in my opinion, other than I believe it is necessary to post some sort of notice for IE6 users asking, but not requiring, them to upgrade their browser something similar to what Google did with YouTube
