1. You can't just swap drives, the original drive has a type of controller chip that will only let that drive play on your PS3.
2. It sounds like your sons PS3 laser isn't working anymore so it needs to be replaced.Either you didnt replace the laser correctly or you got a bad quality chinese replacement/ refurbished laser.
3. I dont know why you fluxed and reflowed the console for when this sounds like a bad laser not a graphics related problem.
4. Cleaning a dead laser with alcohol wont fix it.No offense, unless you smoke heavily and live in a really dusty house it will probably be clean.
5.it has nothing to do with reformatting the Hard drive , resets ect.
6.Replace the original laser in the original drive, preferably buy a replacement that includes a 30 day warranty and that includes the cradle mechanism ( the metal piece that holds the laser it is held by 4 screws on each corner) make sure all the connections are set up right and it should work again after replacement which should take 15-25 min max to open it up and unscrew 4 screws, replace laser mechanism, screw back 4 screws connect everything and load a game.

1.I have since been schooled on swapping drives. I get it now.
2.the laser is not working, the original is not working, the new one is not working, I have also swapped bluray drives (as well as changing to the correct control board) and still nothing. the bluray drive works in another ps3 as well as the lasers so it must be something specific with the control board.
3.reflowed and refluxed for the hell of it I guess, just trying every option.
4.cleaned the laser to be sure that wasnt the problem.
5.reformated just to be sure that wasnt the problem.
6.changing the laser is not the answer (Idont think) I will make sure all connections are good and even swap out a known working laser.
