Ubisoft DRM servers hit by DDoS attack

article published on 9 March, 2010

Ubisoft has confirmed that their DRM servers remained under attack until earlier today, thanks to a DDoS attack. Yesterday we reported that Ubi's servers were down, meaning legitimate buyers of their games could no longer play the game, since the "always connected" DRM could not connect. I still don't think they were hacked...I just think they were overloaded by all the DRM connections...and the ddos attack is just a cover.

But if they were hacked, I hope the hacker gets away with it and goes on to do this to some other evil company.

Agreed. They would have to have some excuse, otherwise the lawsuits will just flow in. Their shiny new DRM experiment might end up really costing them.

This is a class action lawsuit here. Legitimate users paid for the game and even with a notification on the box before purchase warning that an internet connection is required, Ubisoft has failed to hold their end of the implied contract when the sale was made. The user is required to fullfill the requirements listed on the box and with this DRM system, Ubisoft is required to provide the service to authenticate the game. Ubisoft has failed to do so quite a bit lately. I wonder if I get a game now if I would qualify for the inevitable class action lawsuit. But I don't want to be the no-life lawsuit hunter so, whatever. I wonder what the pirated downloads to sales numbers are though.
