Bing takes even more market share for February

article published on 10 March, 2010

According to the latest February data from comScore, Bing continues to take more search market share, again at the expense of Yahoo. Market leader Google grew from 65.4 percent to 65.5 percent while Yahoo fell from 17 percent to 16.8 percent. Bing was the biggest riser, from 11.3 percent to 11.5 percent. Ask remained about flat at 3.7 percent, and AOL stayed completely flat at 2.5 percent. ... [ read the full article ]

Of course Bing will gain market share...it's the default web search engine in Internet Explorer, and Internet Explorer is the default web browser on every single Windows-based machine sold in the US and most of the world. Besides, less-techy people think that the big blue E with the yellow ring around ir (IE's logo) means "Internet", and that there's no other way to access it. AND when you show them Firefox, Chrome, Opera or any other they just go: "No WAY!! IE is better!"...it has happened to me a thousand times.

It is a market as these search engines make billions in revenue for advertisers.

That's 100% correct. Just look at Google and how much money it's made Sergy Brin and Larry Page as well as all those that got in the company really early on.

The reason Google can offer almost all of its services for free is because they are all supported by AdWords and the profit the company gains off it. Because Google is so large that 0.1% increase in market share could earn them tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars in revenue.

Without advertisers, there would be no Google, Bing, MSN, Gamespot, Wired, Engadget, Ars Technica, etc.

If Microsoft (as loathsome as they can be on occasion) can steal market share from Google, my hat is off to them.

Google is Evil. Do the research on them.

A vast majority of ads you see on the web are ran though Google. A lot of websites you named do earn money, and can stay operational, via both AdWords and their own internal ad system.

Since Google is a large, for-profit corporation that is ran by humans (shocking!) they are bound to do some things that strike some people as "evil". I believe they are better than a vast majority of corporations at not being "evil", however.

I completely agree here. When was the last time Google ever tried to fleece customers out of hard earned money? Last time I checked they created a free open source smartphone OS, are offering free ultrafast broadband (to some), offer free word processing tools, created a fast browser, offer free GPS, run the largest free video streaming site, and the list goes on.

However, if they are the next Skynet, we won't know until it's too late o_O

I was actually suprised to read this. I find it hard to believe that bing is gaining market share, as it is definitely a second or even third rate search engine. Are people really too dumb to change the default search engine in internet explorer?
Who knows Google may be the next "skynet." Their co-founders have been selling off large blocks of stock recently. Changes are coming.

It's not, in my opinion, that people are "too dumb" to change the default search engine, it's that they don't want to bother with it. However, I agree that Bing isn't even a decent search engine, especially when it's compared to Google.

Microsoft has been running ads on TV for Bing and with the massive uptake of Windows 7 I'm actually surprised that Bing's market share isn't much closer to Yahoo's.

For many "free" services or apps you must install bing as your primary search engine. I have done that twice last month. Then you unintall in. I bet I was counted twice!
