Ive been watching films on a 8gb memory stick and just wondered if its possible to do the same with a 160gb portable HD ..?

Should be fine. I was doing this actually yesterday on my friend's hard drive. It wasn't like a full motion picture, but some video that he shot using his nice new camera/camcorder.
