I just been given a 360 elite of a mate, as he brought a replacement one. There's nothing wrong with it apart from it doesn't read anything (games, dvds or cds) and just says open tray on the 360 dash.
I have removed the drive from the 360 its an
Hitachi-LG Drive
Model: GDR-3120L
Rom Ver: 0079FL
Date: October 2007
I want to get the key from the drive to put on another one. but how do i go about this as the things i have been reading require the drive to play an audio cd as the drive wont read anything how will i do this?
any help would be great.

download jungleflasher, run jungleflasher and click the guide(top right corner i believe). it'll walk you through the entire process of flashing the drive. in the process you'll see how to dump the original firmware and extract the key. i've never done a hitachi drive before but from what i've read they're kinda easy to brick.
there's alot members on here that are really experienced in this stuff so i'm sure they'll have a more definitive answer for you.
if all else fails.... shoot an email to the key master

Or you could buy a laser on Ebay for about $7 and replace it

hi its not the laser at fault im thinking its the disc motor as i removed the top case and put a disc in. it moved a fraction and then stopped.
im in england and a new drive is £18.99 which isn't much when you get the 360 for nothing. he-he
once i grab the key i want to flash the new drive so i can play my backups.

If buying a replacement drive isn't a problem, just buy a new Hitachi 79 and swap the board from the old drive in to the new Hitachi.

Just type in "360 worm motor" in ebay and find your hitachi compatible one.

The 79's are a little more involved when it comes to flashing.

Swapping isn't a bad idea but hitachi's are junk and by far the worst drive ever made by xbox. Just get a BenQ and spoof to that. Heck, they aren't much more than lasers on ebay and they read and last much better.

In order to do this he would still have to buy a laser and that drive.
The drive motor spins a partial bit and stops because the laser isn't reading a game. The motor doesn't just spin freely every time you close it.

True, I forgot the laser needs to work on the 79 in order to dump, good point. I would get a laser and a drive anyway. Lasers are cheap and easy to install. Maybe do that for a while but plan on spoofing later.

as soon as the drive comes im gonna dump it and spoof then use the hitachi as a spare incase the new one fails.
what drive would i be better of using, once i have the dump of the hitachi?
or i could jtag the 360 and grab the key and then just buy a new drive.

BenQ
Jtag is a lot more work than this and you can't jtag all boxes, only older dashes.

Yep, you can't jtag. And yep, I agree with the Benq being best. Of course, you didn't mention if you'll be playing on LIVE or not. If you want to either use this console on LIVE now, or atleast have that option in the future, then you should stick with the same model drive that's in the 360 now.
