I think I'll stick to my method. A professional reflow is the best bet, but finding someone to do one may bit of a pain. I've tried the heat gun method, and the system lasted a week. I've used an oven and that seems to add some life back to the system, but eventually YLoD returns usually in a matter of a couple months. Personally if you can access to an electronics lab with the proper equipment then that is the place to do a reflow.

Realistically, how many people have such access...and if you are going to spend money to have a professional repair, why not just go the Sony route? At least then you have a warranty for a few months.

The better fix? Take care of cooling in advance, so that the heating/cooling cycles are not as severe, and you don't need the fix in the first place! I know there are a lot of people who are not able to do a cooling upgrade/tweak...but those people can't do a reflow either. If you are capable of doing a heatgun or oven reflow, then you should have been capable of opening the system, adding 5-6 heatsinks (depending on model), replacing the thermal compound, and wiring the fan to run fast.

Whats this cooling mod you speak of Killerbug can't modifing it to run the fans at a higher voltage blow out a capacitor/ mosfet or do some other damage? I don't know opening it while its in working condition? like they say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Its an electronic its not meant to last forever i read somewhere that the average lifespan of a PS3 console is 2 years ( same for many other consumer electronics) so enjoy it while it lasts i guess and get an extended warranty.
