Punish all the pirates, says James Murdoch

article published on 14 March, 2010

James Murdoch, chairman and CEO of News Corps. European and Asian operations has made some interesting comments this week in regards to piracy, calling on governments to "get tough" on illegal downloading. "We need enforcement mechanisms and we need governments to play ball ? There is no difference with going into a store and stealing Pringles or a handbag and taking this stuff. ... [ read the full article ]

Actually, there is a big difference. Stealing from a store results in direct loss of revenue to the store. You stole the Pringles, now they have one less can of Pringles. But if you download a song, you aren't stealing in the same sense. You aren't taking any property away from the artist/record company, and who knows if you would have bought it if you didn't download it illegally.

Another billionaire cheapskate that wants taxpayers, and the government to protect HIS interests. Scary thing is, its people and corporations like his that actually have a huge influence on the government through their lobbyists, and "gifts" to politicians. The current administration in the U.S. isn't exactly friendly with news corps, owner of fox news however. Good luck to them taking up a fight with Google, it would be interesting to see how that turns out. Most likely they'd spend a lot on legal fees for nothing.

If your fish seems sick, put it back in the water.

It's a basic condition for investment and economic growth and there should be the same level of property rights whether it's a house or a movie," said Murdoch. "The idea that there's a new consumer class and you have to be consumer-friendly when they're stealing stuff. No. There should be the same level of sanctity as there is around property. Content is no different. They're not crazy kids. No. Punish them.
I can not click a mouse and create a copy of a can of Pringles, a handbag, or a house. It seems content is indeed different from property.

so that idio is saying that I should care as much if someone steals my wallet, makes a copy of the money and returns it to me, as if he just steals it and keeps the money.
Is it that hard to understand that copying and stealing are two totally different things?

Ok I am game to that...but only if CEOs are fine with treason(take everything they have and kick them out of the US) when they willing run a company into the ground while they keep their millions or infringe on another's IP/CP.

I would happily shove James Murdoch up his father's edited for content.

Edited by moderator ~ Love the enthusiasm but it's just a bit too colorful.

This moron seems to forget that Britain was made by Piracy on the high seas employed by the Crown and if this tosser was around in the old days of Blackbeard , Sir Walter Raleigh etc ,he would've been in cahoots with the lot , creaming off the top. Maybe with a chance of getting his own head cut off.(that would have been worth seeing....
Lets hope we dont get any claims from the spanish for robbing their own pirated gold, or the french or the americans for sinking their ships.
I hope no one is stupid enough to PAY for news from his company, get it FREE everywhere else.....

That's what gets me about all the alleged losses to piracy, the UK (the crown and it's parliament) has robbed the populous blind since forever, and the US isn't off the hook yet as they're one vote away from unprecedented highway robbery ie the Healthcare bill.

..and all we hear about are 'people are downloading without paying, we need to restrict the internet' etc etc etc, makes me sick.

As to news, i will never pay (i won't even buy newspapers anymore), i don't fall for a lot of mainstream news that we are force fed daily, i go looking for news, a big chunk of that is alternative news, just look at who owns most of the big news corps, it's not hard to see who's pushing what and why.
