I'm about to trade in my xbox 360 for a ps3. I just have a quick question before I do so. I would just like to know if psn is completely free including chat and cross game chat. Thanks so much!
PSN is free. Text & Video Chat is free. There is no X Game chat...yet. It is rumored to be coming soon and POSSIBLY as a pay service lumped in with other things like Cloud Gaming, Cloud Saves, Game & Movie Rental as well as other items. Personally I don't think Sony will charge for X Game chat and will give it free in an update.
Well what is Cross game chat? I just read that sony was planning to give it out in Firmware 3.0 although the cross game chat was not compatible with some EA games. Therefore EA was threatening to sue sony if they're games would not work. So there is no cross game chat.
Cross game chat = You are playing game A, a friend is playing game B.
You select his name from your friends list and start talking to him if he is on line.
PSN at the moment, Your playing game A, a friend is playing game B.
You select his name from your friends list and Text message him. Your message shows up on his TV screen in the top right corner. He can Text you right back and you carry on a conversation by Texting.
EA did not make provisions for cross game chat and throw a fit about Sony allowing others to do so. Thats the story anyway. My understanding is that MS owns a patent for Cross game Chat and Sony would have to pay for the ability to do the same.
They need to forget cross-game-chat, it is just a band-aid anyway. They just need a general "Chat" tool that works durring anything; even when watching movies or whatever.

dont trade in your 360 get both then you get both exclusives on games
playing on PSN is completely free and the PS3 has a pretty cool and handy web browser and this type of virtual world sims thing called Playstation Home you can meet and chat with other people in the form of controllable avatars/characters of yourselves if thats what your into, so yeah you can chat and talk with a microphone to other gamers:) But before you trade this in i assume to Gamestop see how much you can get for it on Ebay or amazon Gamestop and pawnshops will give you much less money approximately half of whats its actually worth, most pawn shops check on ebay for the price they sell for then offer you half of that so they make 50% profit.
What Xbox 360 console do you have? Just don't let the store or person your trading to rip you off. If its a person test the system before for at least 1 hour preferrably 2 to see if it doesn't freeze, remember just because it turns on doesn't mean it works fully.
See the reason I'm doing this is because PSN is free and I rarely play video games anymore so the $50 a year isnt worth the one week I play a year. I'll mainly use if for the other features like the blue ray player.
