Hey guys, idk if you've ever painted ur ps3 before but I was thinking about doing so and couldn't find many tutorials on it.

If you know of any please post.

The one I found is http://www.moddingforums.com/ps3-tutoria...easily-wip.html

But it doesn't look finished.

I was thinking about spraying it using spray paint since I don't have the tools for auto paint.

I used to repair ps3's so i got extra parts i can test it on so its cool.

Any tips?

I will also be painting the controller! lol.

has anybody else done this before and how long does the shine last or does it stay for good?

I have painted plenty of cases, including the fronts, which are made from the same kind of plastic that the PS3 is made from. My experience with spraypaint have been very negative. Generaly, the result is not very nice, and it stays "sticky" forever. It also tends to rub off over time.

I know it might sound odd, but you would be better off using a brush. Whatever you do, don't spraypaint the controller...the paint will not stay on the controller very long.

Airbrushing would be better, but your best bet for a good looking, resiliant, "Finished" result would be to take the pieces to a auto repair/paint shop. The PS3 & controler are made from ABS plastic, the same as many car bumpers...this stuff is a pain in the *** to paint correctly; and these people specialize in it.

Yeah, thats a good idea.

Thing is, I want to do it myself so I will try the spray paint tutorial in that link up there, and if it doesn't turn out right I have another shell i can use so its not a big deal to me.

After the spray paint, if it don't look good, I will try the automotive paint myself tho I just wanna do it to see if i can do it lol.

If you must do it yourself, I think you would be much happier with the results of brush paint...I tried the "For Plastic" Krylon paint...and it is just as bad as the other spray paints.

Hmmm, what type of brush paint?

I was also thinking of airbrushing it.

IDK, I will post my findings here though if anyone wants em.

I would just use a good multi-purpose paint...Gliddon makes a great product. You can also have them mix up a batch of just about any color you want...and a good mixer can even mix in texture (the home depot by my place makes a lovely red with a satin finish). It goes without saying that you will need a small brush to do the job on the controllers, and that you should not get any paint on moving parts, or on the surfaces that they move against (this is another reason not to use spray paint).

Good paint will take 12-24 hours to dry enough for a second coat, and can take up to 3 days to get a final, hard surface. This is still better than Krylon for plastics...that never gets a final, hard surface.

Airbrushing is a fine option, partly because the paint used is typically the same stuff you would use with a brush. It also lets you spray a coat of clear...if you do it right, then it will feel like the surface of a freshly waxed car. The only issue with airbrushing is the cost of the equipment...to do it right, you will spend more on equipment and paint than you would have spent on having an auto repair shop do it for you.

Do yourself a favour and lightly scratch the surface with a very finer sand paper. Then thinly coat in pva glue. The prep is 95-/- of a good paint job.

lol, PVA Glue... I had to look that up and i found that its just normal elmers glue.

Why do you want me to do that?

Plus, the % is shift + 5.

What i ended up going with was to buy krylon paint and just spray 5 layers on and put a good clear coat on it (automotive) and polished and it looks great.

Not sure yet about the controls though, might have to airbrush.

also, something i found funny was that im still a junior member when I joined Friday 19 November 2004, lol. Damn 6 years gone by already... this site has been my haven for the past 6 years and I appreciate it!

Glad to hear it worked out...I guess you don't need a good finish if you are going to cover it in clear. Seems like the same approach should work for the controls, so long as you use lots of masking tape.

Your member status is based on how many posts you have made (certain parts of the forum are ignored from the count). My current AD account is only 4 years old...but I post a lot.

For the controllers im just going to take them apart so i don't get the other stuff in the way.

I'm planning on just painting over the "sony" and "sixaxis" stuff.

Also be careful around the holes for the sticks...the tops of the half-ball that the sticks are mounted to ride against the back of the face of the controller...you do not want to paint this contact area.

To follow up, i've painted everything and it looks sweet, and its not sticky or anything yet... its been 6 months and it's just as sweet as ever. I'm gonna paint my cousins xbox 360 soon :D

as far as you what were saying, the analog stick doesn't contact anything at all, it doesn't rub against anything that is. The only thing you needa worry about a little is the ps button when painting... you may paint too much so that it can't fit through the hole any more... to fix that all i did was just took a knife and shaved off a little until it fit.

I'm also gonna paint his xbox 360 controller, that should be awesome.

anybody have any advice on colors??? I'm also gonna paint a slim case soon as well and don't know what to do.

I was thinking red with red flames (using masking tape, not airbrush).

or white glossy (for the slim) and blue stripes possibly.

Another Idea i had was to use metallic paint, so that it looks less solid.

any ideas?

also, to others, do not hesitate to paint your systems... it is very easy... i was a nub and now i'm a 'pro'.

Dunno if you've seen it, but there's a company that will do custom paint jobs for Game Consoles. ColorWare, does paint jobs for the PS3, Xbox 360, iPhone, and many others. You can go to their site here, and they let you view what the system would look like with the colors that they offer.

The only downside, is it's expensive; I mean to send in a PS3 to get it custom painted with one controller is $149, but they do a professional job. I'd do it myself, but I would probably fail at doing it.

And after looking on their site, I wouldn't mind having a Steel painted PS3 with Red logo...

Well, that $150 doesn't include shipment back and forth plus insurance and all that crap.... so you're looking at $200+.

this cost me $20 max plus 3 hours of my time.... I don't have my system with me at this time (livin at my cousins house for now), but as soon as I return home I will definitely post them...

But I will post pics of the slim and xbox 360 + controller.

So the suggestions were: Steel + red ps3 logo, white pearl 360, candy apple 360.

I'm gonna start today but I'm just going to be priming.... so if anyone else has any suggestions i'm listening :D

LoL...maybe you could paint a Wii white next?

I would love to see a PS3 phat painted Midnight Purple #3...but that would probably require a professional shop.

No man, painting a wii white would be crazy..... I'll paint it eggshell.

also, purple seems like a weird color for me. I've decided to paint the xbox 360 controller red and white. I have already primed it and sanded it for the first paint coat... soon enuffff amigos, soon enufff!

Midnight Purple 3 is complicated...Purple with blue, burgundy and copper. Multiple layers in specific patterns...if you are looking for a challenging project, this is the color to use.

Oh, there is also a Midnight Purple 4...it is like MP3, but it is black under light conditions that MP3 is dark purple...AFAIK, only Nissan Japan can paint this color correctly.
