Bear with me, I want to get as much detail as I can down to help pin down the exact problem.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up Final Fantasy XIII and up until Sunday all was well, but on Sunday I started to have some problems with the PS3 when tying to play XIII.

The problem began when I returned from getting some lunch, I went to close the status screen and was greeted by a Spinning disk icon and "Now Loading" in the bottom right corner of the screen something which in two weeks of playing had never happened, after 5-10 seconds the game continued without trouble until I ran into a battle at which point it refused to load again. After a minute or so I tried to Eject the disk and the game immediately loaded the battle and continued playing for about 10 seconds until the disk Disk finally ejected (yes it took that long to eject)and I was returned to the XMB.

Since then similar crashes have occurred regularly when trying to play FFXIII with long delays for the disk to eject and refusal to shut down/return to XMB by conventional means (PS button/Power button on the console) until the disk has ejected to stop the loading process, many of thee failed loads were preceded by a sudden disappearance of the in game music. These loading problems are also accompanied by a regular double clicking (for want of a better term) sound that sounds like a component in the drive is trying to adjust to read the disk but failing repeatedly. At this point in time the game will almost certainly fail to load during the loading screen following the loading of a save data making the game impossible to play.

A Few more points before I am done:

1) My PS3 is an old UK 40GB model number CECHG03
2) The game disk has worked perfectly for almost 60 hours of play and looks no less perfect than the day it was bought.
3) So far no other games have has loading failure, perhaps due to not being dual layer, perhaps due to their significant install data, but It does feel like the PS3 is loading them a little slower than usual.

If anyone got any ideas as to what the problem could be and how to fix it I would welcome them.

Youve clocked in alot of hours (60 hours on that game alone) and its an older 40GB model id say the laser is dying its an electronic its not meant to last forever ive read the PS3 has an average lifespan of 2 years. BUt since the machine still powers on and you say it doesnt give any graphics glitches like green squares pop up and the game freezses or something then it would be much worse, i guess you can try replacing the laser its fairly easy and the process takes around 15 min or less ive replaced around 11 or so then your games should load like new again. Oh yeah buy the replacement laser with the mechanism/cradle/carriage not just the laser that way you replace the whole carriage and laser in one repair and by unscrewing 4 screws less hassle.
