I need help setting up my PS3 to receive 5.1 surround. So, here goes.
1. I have a Sony TV which does NOT have an HDMI input. So instead, I used component cables to connect the PS3 to the TV.
2. From there, I connected a digital optical cable from the back of my PS3 into my Bose DVD Player/Theater System (Normally, I play the PS3 with just the TV speakers, but I have an option of running audio through the Bose system [Like when I'm playing really loud games]. Running the audio through the Bose system is preferable because this is where I get my 5.1 speakers, but the problem is whether or not I'm getting true 5.1 surround sound)
3. Once connected, I click Audio Output Settings>Optical Digital> [Then which one/s do I pick (Linear PCM 2 Ch. 44.1kHz AND Linear PCM 2 Ch. 48 kHz have already been selected)? Do I pick Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch. and/or DTS 5.1 Ch. and/or AAC?
Is this setup correct? And if it is, is there any way I can test whether or not I'm getting true 5.1 surround sound? [Such as downloading an test audio file or playing a test movie. As of now, I don't have any Blu-Ray movies yet]
What killerbug said. Yes, you are getting true surround sound. BUT, I dont know about your receiver but with mine I can test all the speakers individually. They just play a white noise (static). Then, using some sort of frequency meter (I cant think of what its called) I can adjust the volume of each speaker so that it sounds equal where I sit. So no speaker is over powering another. Just another way to fine tune your system.
