I had an XBOX 360 that had the three red lights and then no video output. I bought another XBOX 360 that had a disk read problem. Since one box had one probem and the other another, I just swapped out parts. Now all I did was open the one with the dvd drive problem and simply disconnected thedrive and removed it. I then opened up my other one and disconnected the good dvd drive and placed it in the better console. So just to be clear, all I did was swap out drives. When I started the fixed console back up, I got the "To play this disk place it in a XBOX 360 console" error. These consoles were the same generation and the drives were the same..just a year apart in age. The console plays DVDs fine. But what about the games?? Every game is the same error. I know nothing about flashing or some "key" or how to install software on it, or "removing the chip" or anything. All I want is the damn thing to work. What do I need to do? The drive is obviously good since it plays DVDs, the console is clean and does not overheat. What patch doI need to download and install to get this thing to register 360 games?

On a side note, I'm in Iraq and don't have access to game sites on my restricted computer, so please don't refer me to a link because I won't be able to get to it. If you do have a solution, please email me at *email removed*.

ANY help that would fix this error would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

You have to extract the dvd key from the original drive and inject it into the new drive you are trying to use. There is a program called JungleFlasher which is used for this. Extracting the key depends on what drives you have (BenQ, Hitachi or Lite-On). The BenQ and Hitachi's are easy to extract but if you have a Lite-On you will need a probe. I guess the first thing to ask is what dvd drive do you have?

i'm all for it xbl games on a handset. i can finally play something else besides solitaire while taking a dump now... AND get achievements at it!!!

Thanks for your quick reply back,
Looking at the one I removed, it's a Phillips and Lite-on. The one I put in is also. Ok, When I download this JungleFlasher program, how do I physically do the whole key exchange thing? What do I need to have as far as cables and such? Probe?? What are the directions?

If it's the exact same drive, all you need to do is open the dvd drives and swap the circuit boards. Done. You can then flash it like normal.

Thanks! Now what do you mean by "flash"?

You don't have to flash it.
Box 1: Red Ringed but drive works.
Box 2: Drive doesn't work.

There is a circuit board in the DVD drive. Basically you're gonna put the drive from box 1 into box 2, but before that you need to swap circuit board 1 into drive number 2.

In other words the end result will be:
Xbox 2, with Xbox 1's drive in it, and Xbox 2's circuit board inside Xbox 1's drive for a working console.

The reason is that in every Xbox 360 the motherboard and the DVD drive's circuit board have matching "keys". So basically, you'll just be swapping ONLY the mechanical part of the drive, so the keys will still match and the drive will read games.

Hope this helps.
PS: Don't name your title "HELP HELP HELP HELP". In the title, describe the problem and people will help.

That's good advise. This I can do...just swap out hardware. I'll let you know how it turns out. As for the title, I've got another message board I'm always on and to grab immediate attention I have to word the title like that. I've found that this forum is one of the most strict forums I've been on. As soon as I fix this thing, I'll pop out. It's been nice getting quick responses though and it sounds like your advise wil fix my issue, so if you need anything from over here in Iraq, just let me know and I'll send it to ya.

??? Yeah and make way more work. This is a horrible method unless you want to solder all the wires back on the pcb. Just dump the firmware and spoof to the new drive. 10 seconds compared to this pain. Plus, most noobs on here don't even know how to solder.

You're missing the point. This is the easier method for someone like him. Flashing, spoofing, dumping, key.bin, etc are all overwhelming terms to someone like him. And the process can be overwhelming to them also. How many noobs struggle with flashing their drives? Countless. We see post after post after post about flashing questions that are trivial to us, but are ponderous to them. On the other hand a noob who can't do any "real" soldering can detach the and re-attach the 6 color-coded wires which are on HUGE solder pads, AND spaced far enough apart. And this way he won't brick his drive which many a noob has done trying to flash. Hell, last year my son, at 12 years old at the time swapped the board of his BenQ on his own, with electrical tape because I won't let him use my irons yet.

Ok, how do I "dump the firmware" and "spoof to my new drive" then? Your right, this noob hasn't soldered anything since 1990...nor do I have a soldering iron. Worse comes to worse, I could just take the drves dow to our little Haji electronic store and get them to do it for $25, but I'd rather "dump and spoof"....Just gotta tell me how.

1: Connect the drive to your PC.
2: Read the key in the firmware and save it to your PC (dump).
3: Write the key to the another/different drive (spoof).
It's all in the JungleFlasher guide/tutorial.

Actually pretty easy. You'll need to invest in a $10 6421 via card and I would recommend an xtractor if you're going to be flashing more drives (even for updating). Too many people use the 360 to power the drive and brick their drive.
