I know it states that the update is to be released on the 1st of April, but its on the official Sony blog, so i dont think its an April Fools joke.
Quote: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the ?Install Other OS? feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the ?Other OS? feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the ?Other OS? feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
* Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
* Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
* Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
* Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the ?Other OS? feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the ?Other OS,? as they will not be able to access that data following the update.
Additional information about PS3 firmware updates, including v3.21 (once it becomes available), can be found here:

Update or not, I know that I have an extra PS3 that will NEVER be updated if this happens so I can keep the functionality that I was told/promised on day one when I purchased said PS3 on launch day. I feel this is a gross negligent violation of what I was offered (and payed for) for the specific PS3 I bought.
I absolutely REFUSE to lose functionality in something I payed my hard earned money for back in 2006. And I will continue to have YDL/OtherOS & even Emulators on my PS3. PERIOD.

@ glassed
+1 totally agree
but when people were saying that a PS3 hack will offer nothing good.... they were people that saying "geo you are a god" and all that $h!7
i cant imagine what this will do to people (like one of my friends) that he upgraded the HDD and bought mouse-keyboard set just for Linux.
I'll wait till the update and if that comes true i will ask for a refund for both of my PS3's.

I will totally thank him if and when CFW is available. Im sure you guys will all thank him, and others as well as soon as all features are restored with CFW. I have no need to install this future update so we will see what comes of this.
BTW, here is geohots blog on this matter

It looks like GeoHolt's crack will be more important than ever...
Potential Features:
Run PS2 games
Run Linux
Cross-game chat
MKV support
If only sony would give us these features (or not take them away!!!), there would be no need for a crack. I hope this works just like "Always on DRM"...that is, it forces the crack to come out a lot faster!
I know at least one person who is going to be pissed...he has no PC, and he uses his PS3 linux to replace a PC...and he plays games on the PSN...

I never cared about Linux on my PS3, but i dont like the feature being taken away either.
As KillerBug said, his friend uses his PS3 as a personal computer, there are so many other people who depend on the PS3 as a personal computer, for Sony to take this feature away from a console in which it was already installed, is wrong and unfair.
Whats next, the removal of PS2 playability from backwards compatible consoles....

"Whats next, the removal of PS2 playability from backwards compatible consoles.... "
I would not be surprised.
My friend just bought a new sony photo printer for his PS3...a photo printer that DOES NOT work with PS3 OS!
Fact is, he needs it as a computer so much that he will probably stop using it as a gaming system...and he buys 2-3 games a month right now. Now he will have to buy another one...and sony will loose money again (they loose money on every one sold). Either that, or he will say "F**K YOU SONY" and buy a 360.
Me? I don't really need PS3 linux, and PS3 linux is rather slow & useless anyway...not very useful if you have a PC. It wouldn't even be a big deal if sony would enable some of the basic functions, such as MVK and FLAC support.

ok, Sony, if you're looking through the forums, I hope you read this.
DO. NOT. EVER. REMOVE. BACKWARDS. COMPATIBILITY.
seriously, if you keep insisting in removing features, no one will care about you platform, which right now "only does S#!T" because axing features is ridiculous. It's like ubi slapping the paying customers in the face.

Anyone else had troubles with that download? My av software says it is a trojan.
Nevermind, only Eset seems to think it is bad.
Still a big PITA just to keep the features that were listed on the box that the system came in.
Oh, and does this firmware update even do anything? I've been looking around, and it seems that all it does is to remove the OtherOS support and the network speed test tool...it does not seem to add anything, and it does not seem to fix any problems!
BTW...I had been waiting for the PSPhone to come out, but after this crap, I decided to get a droid...no point buying from sony anymore; Sony will end up disabling calling on the PSPhone as a "security measure".

I too thought it had to be some sort of sick april fools joke, but no cigar. The removal of otherOS thuroughly disgusts me. Theres no point in its removal really besides that people have started to make the otherOS actually reasonably functional.

That lg5 tool thing is good but i find psn disconnects at random times (usually playing a game even if its not specifically multiplayer)
I found if you ran your own dns (which i cant be bothered to) or change your ps3 dns to 67.202.81.137
this saves you running your pc at the same time as your ps3
the only drawback reported is you cant use your head set online
but in my case its better then being disconnected half way through a match or not being able to connect to psn

I dont really use the PSN so I will wait until I update. Im not looking foward to any games for the PS3 this year besides GOW3 and heavy rain and Iv already completed those so Im good.
Because with my luck I will update and then something cool will come out on PS3 linux. So until then Im good. The only game I ever play online is MW2 anyways and I use my 360 for that.

I changed the DNS and I use a P21 headset. No disconnections and my headset works fine.

I think my console might end up on ebay...I have not even touched the thing since this was announced. I might have to setup the proxy so I can play my games for now...but I don't think I will be buying anything with the word "Sony" on it anymore...and that includes the games themselves. Too bad...I was looking forward to GTALCS and GT5.
Thank you sony...I was on the verge of being a fanboy...no more worries about that...now I just have one issue...where to game?
PS3 = overcontrolling bastards that steal the features I pay for.
360 = overcontrolling bastards that remotely disable consoles (assuming they don't just break on their own)
Nintendo = My PS2 has better graphics.
PC (still microsoft) = everything is loaded with DRM...some of it will even end a game if you loose connection for a second. On top of that, many require that awfull "games for windows" or "Steam"
Linux = Very few games available, those that are available suck.
...They are making it very hard to be a gamer; the only option I seem to have left is to use the PC to pirate games...and then I can't play online (or it isn't safe to play online).

lol i take it your quite angry, understandable, you don't sell a product with the ability to run an Other OS, then just take it away, its unfair and wrong.
Though don't be hasty with the selling of your console on Ebay just yet, lvl2 of the Hypervisor was dumped last night, we are getting slowly closer :)
