Quote: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the ?Install Other OS? feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the ?Other OS? feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the ?Other OS? feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
* Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
* Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
* Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
* Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the ?Other OS? feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the ?Other OS,? as they will not be able to access that data following the update.
Additional information about PS3 firmware updates, including v3.21 (once it becomes available), can be found here:

Yeah its BS, your forced to update because basically either you lose the other OS option or you lose access to online play+ Playstation Network+ you can't play newer PS3 releases (games) until you update! WTF an update that actually takes away features wheater you do it or not!!

The PS3 was never manufactured as a "games machine", it was presented as a "super computer", as im sure you know, computers have other operating systems.
The internet browser statement, has no merit as it is rubbish, browsing on it is a pain.
Regardless of wether i have a PC or not, many people dont and were counting on the other os, that they used on the PS3 super computer.
Also no need to insult Geohotz, you obviously have no clue what he is trying to accomplish and if being a playstation fan means being constantly screwed by Sony, then id rather not be one.

They obviously used it at some stage, or they wouldn't have had to touch the HDD, also they didn't need to update their firmware to downgrade their console, so that they could play online, they could have kept the Other OS and still played online.

And in the process they are getting rid of others who use OtherOS for legitimate reasons, such as for playing .mkv media (a feature which could have easily been included in a firmware update, but which, after four years and many, many firmware updates, has yet to even show up as a possibility) or using it as an actual computer with a USB keyboard/mouse and WiFi and OpenOffice and Firefox and the like.

There are quite a few people who bought the PS3 because of its ability to act as a "total computer." Sony even advertises it as doing everything. Packing as much as you can - game system, computer system, media player - into one physical product saves on a lot of physical space, so it'd be naturally of interest to people who have limited space... as is the case with many Japanese residents.

1.) You're only assuming that OtherOS would still be there. OtherOS was removed from the slim consoles prior to the hack being revealed. It could very well have been that OtherOS as a whole was going to be eliminated in the future anyway, and that geohotz's hack simply sped up the process.
2.) There are plenty of reasons to hack the PS3 - full RSX/Cell access on Linux, reintegrating PS2 backwards compatibility (through full software emulation) either through Linux or through the XMB, allowing .mkv playback through the XMB (because it's obviously already possible through Linux), and plain ol' research and development of homebrew, to name a few.
Heck, video encoding on an unlocked PS3 would positively blow everything else out of the water, given the right know-how. Imagine creating a 1080p CGI film about Frogger trying to dodge vehicles driven by the Geico gecko. It would take absolutely no time to render all of that... presumably.

I semi agree with you. Its annoying for a forum to get build up with this type of question.
I myself think Geohot is amazing, its not his fault sony come across with a knee jerk reaction. As has been said, they could of put steps in place to patch the security hole instead of removing the fuctionality all together.

lol how can you call Gehotz a fag, he started this, everyone was stuck until Geohotz did what he did and btw ps3news are idiots, none of this work is theirs, it belongs to Demomhades and his guys, so perhaps proper linkage to the right source, also the lvl2 dump is basically useless.

It might be there for a couple of months...until someone else did the same thing. The fact is that GeoHot is not a pirate, and he has done nothing to allow for piracy.
However, Sony's response to GeoHot is to take OtherOS away from users. If Piracy is theft, what do you call it when Sony STEALS my features, as well as 10GB of hard disk space? They act like they will not have any games if someone gets the ability to use the GPU from linux, because one day it might lead to piracy somehow...yet companies line up to make PC and XboX360 games; and both of these platforms seem designed for piracy.
If you really are a Sony Fan/Playstation Fan, then you should be sending GeoHot donations for his work at improving the platform...and you should be flooding Sony's phone lines with protest calls...to prevent them from trying to destroy their own platforms anymore. If they get away with this, there will be no limits...they will be able to drive themselves into the ground as hard as Sony Music did (and continues to do).

i called him a fag cause he didnt share anything.
about ps3news, you may call them thieves but at least they share.
About the otherOS i came to a conclusion that GH wasnt the reason why sony removed it.
I believe for some reasons they wanted for a long time now to remove it (Slim) and
GH is just an excuse.
I did the update to my 40gb but i left my 60gb without.
I dont use linux to my ps3's, i havent even try to install linux, but i just didnt like the idea of removing something that i have payed for and with that fascist way.
Last week i called sony and they didnt gave me an explanation why they did it, other than what the blog says, and i am waiting for a reply cause i asked them for some refund or something???
If i dont get reply this week i will call them back, even tho that i am sure that they will reply with the same BS.

You are so wrong, he shared his work, he gave it to many devs, like Mathieulh, Demonhades, he even let PS3News have it, he released it to EVERYONE.

Awesome, thanks for the video :)
I was pissed about Sony removing the OtherOS because I use SAK to rip my store bought legally purchased Blu-Ray movies.

Same here. SAK is the only use I have for OtherOS (since I can use the PC right next to the PS3 as my media player now), but it's still nice to know that I have the option of putting a good distro of Linux onto the PS3 once it becomes reasonably usable (ie full RSX/Cell access).
That said, I thought the vid was a fake at first, but it's cool seeing just how quickly Geohot got the update to register with the PS3.
