How to Overclock your fan

If you guys want to put a new heat sensor to control the fan via the heat of a ps3 i think the best you can do best you can do its to put this 3.3V wire and with a heat sensor (LM35DZ) and a microcontroller to the WPM wire do the job...

I think that you would only need two diodes to make it safe to run at lower speeds...the wire from the pot goes into a diode, and the fan feed wire from the mainboard goes into another diode. Both diodes attach to the wire going into the fan. That way, the fan runs slow under light load (but not as slow as stock), and if the load gets too high for that fan speed, it will revert to the voltage of the mainboard output. I think this should work...I just have not tried it because I am perfectly happy with my PS3 jet engine.

READ EVERYBODY THAT ARE HAVING FREEZING IN XMB OR EVEN AT START UP
Hi. I've bought second-hand PS3 for 75$ with a lot of problems. One of them was critical - PS3 froze after 10 second till 2 minutes after startup, no matter what I did. Sometimes after freezings it went yellow light so I thought it's Ylod. I did heatgun YLOD fix, but that didn't help. So I found that fan is too quiet, and I decided it's not working properly. I checked pins, but them were Ok, so I decided manually force fan to move.
What I did: I have PAL 60GB PS3 so I cut GRAY wire of the fan, and connected it to very left wire of power supply cord. Freezing stopped, but PS3 was so loud, so I thought It's going to fly =) I connected Rheostat (I have old Soviet one) to gray wire, but to my astonishment - it didn't correct speed. I tried different resistors - fan or not working, or spinnig on full speed. I don't know why It didn't worked, either Fan is faulty (don't get PWM signal properly), or I did something wrong.
So, I decided to correct voltage itself, so I cut RED wire from fan, and set rheostat there - it worked perfectly! But I have some small issues - 1. rheostat is getting very hot, but this is not problem till it works =) 2. It corrects speed strangely, when i move wheel of rheostat for a little - speed of fan increases greatly.
Maybe I'll fix this issues with resistor connected before rheostat, but not soon =)
I'm adding a picture of this. I hope it will help somebody. ;)

I can't even guess where you sourced that rheostat from, but I have a feeling it is your main issue. Soviet electronics were never very good, and any soviet electronics that are still around are now very old.
As for doing the resistance drop, this will slowly kill your fan.

I'm not sure about resistance drop that will kill the fan slowly - rheostat actually is variable resistance, I'm just thinking of relocation some resistance on resistor, so rheostat will not be heated much.
But you're not right about soviet electronics - it's made to work for ages ;) The problem of controlling is not concern with rheostat, it concern special way of controlling fan. I've read from this thread (or maybe another), that the guy that uses rheostat from ebay having same issue - speed of fan increase/decrease greatly for the slightes movement.
But for me It's not a problem, it's still easy to control the speed of fan.

Yes, the nature of pwm means that the sweet spot of the POT is small...but the pot/rheostat should not be getting hot with so little power; especially one as large as yours...that thing looks like it is designed for about 50w or more.

Well, 12V is not so little, and I don't know what current is going through it. And It is 3W thing actually. And I saw in another forum (of Xbox360), where guy did similar work and set similar (of characteristics) rheostat, and it was getting hot too.
If rheostat would work with PWM wire, it wouldn't be hot, but in my fan pwm control doesn't work, so I used RED wire of power supllying fan.

Hey anymore updates?
Also anyone have a detailed guide to overclocking the fan in a 80GB PS3 (CECHE). I'm a noob when it comes to this.

As for overclocking, I have yet to see anything like that...the goal of this mod is not to allow overclocking, but simply to allow the system to run at stock speed without burning itself up.

But i dont know which wire is the 3v wire that I need. There are 5 wires and i dont know which one

Use a multimeter...it is one of the wires that reads as a ground when the system is off.
