Hey guys,

I've been "toying" with a few of these things for a little while, and looking to see what people think about them! I enjoy doing things that are "outside of the box" and am currently looking into a variety of new mods and designs to do as well, and if you have some ideas you'd like me to try, please let me know! Here are a few things that I've already done:
http://tech-kings.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=56

Here is a worklog for my Real Carbon Fiber Xbox 360 Shell which is my current/next project. Just wish time wasn't such a sparse thing these days! So many ideas and projects, and so little time!
http://tech-kings.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=58

Like I mentioned earlier, I'm looking to see what people think, and also looking for inspiration. Various forums have provided me with many great ideas, and hoping I can find some more!

I'll also update this thread when I have updates, especially for the 360 case, which I will hopefully have time for making some major progress this coming weekend.

I look forward to seeing what you have to say and hope you enjoy these!

It works for me looks cool, my friend just did my xbox and he inserted a canvas over one side of my xbox( like when you want to put a window in) and then hooked up a light mod so whenever there is sound the canvas lights up with different colors. Its hard to explain.

Okay... I post on a lot of forums, easier to post links instead of entire threads on a wide array of forums, if you are really that offended I'll post the full thread here. Awefully responsive for a "spammer" aye?

Hey guys!

Had a little time to get more work done on the CFX Project, and will hopefully finish it completely in the next weekend or the one after that. Came along pretty nicely so far, and should look great when it's done!

A full worklog of the carbon fiber application is shown here
http://www.tech-kings.net/forums/viewtop...t=58&p=141#p141

Here's what it looks like after application to the case, for some reason this image got resized, so the resolution is a little low for my taste, but the other pictures in the worklog are fine.

Hope you like it!

Seems a bit much for me. I like a simple paint job or a clear window.

I like the way that it looks but for carbon fiber usually the benefits are high strength and low weight. You're actually adding to a plastic shell and adding more weight, it's kind of pointless. Since you're doing it for purely an aesthetic reason then i'd say its going fairly well. Though you should have taken more time to prep and sand. Those feet could have been sanded down and eliminated to provide a cleaner surface.

Usually when i prep i sand then wash and then apply adhesion promoter. Anyway it looks good and i'd like to see better pics of the faceplate and the case when every thing is said and done.

I have a carbon fiber hood for my car and the way finished carbon fiber looks is just amazing. I'm looking forward to more pics.

Thanks for the words!

I debated about the feet for awhile, and decided to keep them as I may put some new rubber feet over the carbon when it's finished.

When it's done I'll put it all together and definitely take more pictures of it all. I'm going to be getting some more sandpaper grits to ensure this one has a flawless finish, and I'll get out the DSLR and take some good pics of everything when it's done.

Here's a mod idea I had for the future, and perhaps you guys wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts on it.

It would involve a carbon fiber case, with a gray tinted window cut out. I'd place white LED's or a white LED computer fan on the window, with the idea of creating a "silvery" color on the window which would hopefully contrast well with the shiny black of the carbon fiber.

I'll also be sure to post in the modded Xbox section as well!

I ordered some Silver "carbon fiber" (really aluminum-treated fiberglass) today and will be experimenting with that as soon as I have some time to do so! Should look awesome!

Also, I've developed a new technique for these smaller fab jobs to create a more uniform and professional resin finish with minimal work, and I'm excited to get the ball rolling on that, hope the UPS man can hurry up to get me my supplies :)

Got a chance to get some more done this weekend! Let's see what we have here!

First thing, I was able to get a clear layer on the carbon fiber Xbox shell, but doesn't look as though I'll be able to completely finish it this weekend. More work shown in the Worklog: CFX (Carbon Fiber Xbox 360).

The project I have planned is for someone who wants a silver "carbon fiber" Xbox Shell, and it should look great, and will be a cheaper alternative to real carbon fiber!

I have also had a few requests for carbon fiber controllers, and got started on one of them this weekend. It is already turning out to be much better than the first trial-run, and is coming along awesome! It doesn't look like I'll get this completely finished this weekend either, but it will be very close to it.

A full worklog for doing an Xbox 360 controller in carbon fiber is at Worklog: Carbon Fiber Xbox 360 Controller.

We will also be working on some Playstation 3 controller paint designs which should also turn out to be great, so keep an eye out for that!

Hope you like it and thanks for looking!

Finally got some time to work on things some more the past day!

Both projects received their second layer of resin after knocking down the first layer, and smoothing out any high spots and build a smooth base for subsequent layers.

Next, the second layer will be sanded down and smoothed for the final, third layer, which will be multigrain sanded to a polish and given a final finish of automotive clearcoat to protect the finish!

Here's how the controllers are coming out, you can see that a smooth and glossy shine is beginning to be very prevalent. This picture was taken of cured resin, so it's really coming together quickly. The third layer will be a fairly thin layer, with a final knockdown/smooth/polish and it will be ready for some intense gaming!

After meticulous sanding with 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 grit sandpaper until we have a very smooth surface, I then began removing the masking, and trimming any excess and ensuring a tight and even fit between the halves, and also ensuring that the buttons moved freely.

Testing the fit of the halves

As you can see, the surface is now very even and smooth, and the pieces mesh very well!

Once everything was thoroughly tested to ensure fit and finish, it's time for the automotive clear coat! This is where all the hard work really comes to life!

I'm just going to let the images do the talking, and I'll caption one here and there

The pieces ready for their clear coat finish!

I used an airbrush since it's such a small piece, so I can get into all the smaller nooks and crannies

After the initial clear coat layer, which we allow ample dry time before applying the second layer of clear

Now, after 3 coats, it's looking BEAUTIFUL!

I'll be letting the clear cure for about a week before I assemble it, and will post pictures when it's all together!

Thanks!

Looks great, i'd suggest you paint the grey part of the controller black or even do carbon fiber over it. Also you could get the black thumbstick and black dpad kit and it would look perfect.

Here's the link to the dpad

Here's what the controller looks like with both, and the grey part painted.

I just think the grey parts take away from the custom cf work.

That's a very good point, and I've often grappled with which I would like better. One thing I do like about the grey is it gives it a little bit of a contrast, which is nice in some respects, and, like you said, there is that awesome full black color scheme which looks really BA. I'll be sure to try a full black one in the near future for you!

Well, it's about time that this Carbon Fiber Xbox 360 gets finished! I just finished applying the final buildup layer of the Xbox 360 shell (had some goofups that needed fixing, which accounts for part of the time delay, not to mention having a lack of time), and will do the final sanding, polishing, followed by application of an automotive quality clear coat! It's shaping up great, and I'm refinishing the faceplate as well to ensure a beautiful shine and finish on the whole thing!

I also have the first layer on a silver "carbon fiber" faceplate, and will have pictures of all this when it's done, which should be by the weekend!

As always, more pics can be seen here at the Carbon Fiber Xbox 360 Worklog.

Here are some of the faceplate (have to clean up the tape goo off the power button and slot covers)

We experimented with this one, and, as it is, it's not perfect, some mistakes were made, but we learned alot with it, and the next one should be stellar! A couple notes on what will be changed with the next one, first, we have resin dye, so the base layer that goes down onto the shell is dark black, so you won't get the white see-through. Another thing is that we planned on drilling out the holes for the vents, but that didn't pan out, and we had to cut and remove the carbon over those areas, it will be taped off next time, and everything will be cleaner and neater. We also experimented with some laminating techniques that mostly worked, but left some hefty flaws that were difficult to remove, and some remnants are still there, sadly. The next one won't see these same issues, and I'm very happy with how much I learned with this one, and it still came out alright.

Another controller ready for a lucky owner!

And we are on our way with trying out a silver "carbon fiber" faceplate!

As always, hope you enjoy!

Here's a little something my brother has been working on, it's completely freehand, and will be done once the little smears and everything are fully touched up, the battery box is having some clear coat work on it, and I didn't feel like running over to the shop to get it just for a quick picture. He's definitely the artist of the family, and considering this is all freehand, it's not too shabby!

And here's the (almost) finished Silver faceplate. It still needs final sanding and finishing to a polish before a clear coat, but is pretty smooth considering it hasn't had any of that done yet. A little disappointed that I didn't pay attention, and applied resin at the same time as a carbon fiber piece, and some of the black transferred in spots and gives it a darkish, and not perfectly clear finish. That's what practice is for though, the next one won't have that problem!

Thanks!

Hey guys,

It's been awhile, life has been crazy, but I've slowly gotten some new equipment, and will be taking this to the "next level" and have some real, professional equipment and will be applying this to a controller this weekend, should get perfect results this time in far less time, less sanding, and less overall cost due to the reduction in the amount of epoxy and number of epoxy coats needed to get a flawlessly smooth finish!

I'll have pictures this weekend of my new processes!

Thanks again for looking guys, and hope you enjoy!
