Ok, my goal is to connect my PS3 to the surround sound. The surround sound (Sylvania HT-6051F ) and TV (Toshiba 24AF41) only have RCA connections. I was thinking of running an optical cable from the PS3 to a converter (DAC Digital to Analog Converter, GTV-DIGAUD-2-AAUD) that is Digital to RCA. Would this device work to establish my PS3 to the surround sound? Your feedback would be of great help. Have a good morning, afternoon, or evening.
That surround system is total junk, and only works as 5.1 when using the DVD player anyway. I think you would be a lot happier just getting a cheap 5.1 reciever. If you don't have much cash, you can wire the front Sylvania speakers & sub into it.
I would then connect the subwoofer you have to the powered subwoofer port. Then I would cut the RCA plugs off of your front and center speakers, and strip the wires so they can be used with the receiver. I would then get some cheap speaker wire, and (here is the tricky part) open up the rear speakers, bypass all the circuitry, and solder the speaker wires directly to the speakers.
If you prefer not to modify your speakers (or if you just want good speakers), you can get much better speakers than your kit has for a good price....below is a link to a kit on amazon for $120, it includes all 6 speakers, and the sub is powered, so you can use it with an affordable receiver:

[edit] I know that $270 may be more than you want to spend, but this is something that you will be using for a VERY long time...a good receiver can last decades (I have a stack of of them at my house dating back to the early 1960's...all working), and good speakers should last at least 10 years. That said, you might consider ebay for the receiver (just make sure you get one with 5.1 output, and at least two digital inputs (ideally, at least one optical and at least one HDMI))...but I would still buy the speakers new.
i was having trouble getting my ps3 audio to play out my surround sound. i had my ps3 plugged into my tv w/ an hdmi and then my tv into my surround and it wouldnt work. i ended up using the rca plug for the ps3 and an hdmi and going into setting and setting it up to run audio 2 channel and plugging the ps3 dirrectly into the surround the reason for 2 channel is so you still get sound to the tv when you dont want to use the surround
If you read the first post, he was already running in stereo (or at least he knew how to set it up); he wanted to go to 5.1...and the cheap bastards that made his system cut so many corners that it won't even send signals to the rear speakers unless you are using the built-in DVD player.

I dont know what type of receiver you have but I run an hdmi from the ps3 to the tv for video only. I run an optical cable from the ps3 to the receiver for the audio. Just have to set the correct settings on the ps3. On some receivers you can run hdmi into it carrying both audio and video. The receiver plays the audio and then you run another hdmi from the receiver to the tv and it sends the video to the tv. I think its called switching. This works well if you have multiple devices running hdmi. My receiver doesnt do that so I dont really know a whole lot about it.
Cypres - he tells you what kind of receiver he has in the first post. If you had looked, you would realize that it only has stereo inputs...no optical or HDMI.
Thank you for correcting me. I apologize for making that terrible mistake. It's just that I don't have too much time to spend on here. Apparently, I tend to skip over some details. I have such a busy life outside of the internet, you know like real friends, I just bought a house, a new dog and something that I'm sure is unfamiliar to you a girlfriend. But I will try harder next time to pay attention to details. Enjoy the beautiful weather outside!
