strange cracking sound in my ps3

I bought a ps3 slim 3 weeks ago and i noticed that there is a stranges cracking-like sound coming from my ps3.

Is it normal? Or maybe because I keep my ps3 in a travel bag and it usually positioned standing on its rear side when inside the bag.

Is it bad for the ps3 to be positioned besides the vertical and horizontal position like the manual says?

It is probably the Hard drive, i have a 160GB that i got open box for like $159 it looked like new the controllers cables and stuff where all wrapped not open so i got it at a great price but it does this low crackling sound too its not bothersome to me while it accesses the HD but it works completely normal and ive had it for a year and 3 months and have mostly played like close to 300 hours total on it no problems. BUt one weird thing ive noticed which is why i am almost completely sure the crackling is the hard drive is that on my system it would take like 9 hours 43 minutes to completely reformat! which is insane i wouldnt keep the system on that long ever so if i could i would defragment or reformat the drive on my PC or possibly get a replacement HD if i where to sell it.

Yeah, that is a bad disk. The PS3 (and the HDD itself) are smart enough to read around errors when they are found...so every time you hear a "click" you have a new error on the disk. Try not to put too much data on the disk; it is working hard just to keep what you have.

BTW...every time it has to read around an error, it slows the system. Also, if you continue to get new clicks after a full format, that means the drive is getting worse.

Well if thats the case then i shouldn't worry about it too much. But the noise really bothers me sometimes, hope there is no problem with my ps3.

this sounds more likely to be plastic heating and cooling,my slim does the same thing after it shuts down it will crackle a bit as it cools down,my mates does the same cheap construction to blame.

its the heat expanding the case its normal . As long as the fans work your ok . I phoned sony to ask them
