Can anybody please tell what me what are the reasonable/good video resolutions above WVGA(852x480) and below 720p(1280x720). I'm looking for a large yet reasonable video resolution under 720p...

For what? Converting an AVI/MKV ? Viewing on the PC?
I don't think it matters as long as the width/height are divisible by 16 (or 8 or 4),
and you maintain the aspect ratio.

I cant play 720p properly on my PC. So, I was looking for a reasonably large(but smaller than 720p) resolution to convert 720p-MPEG4(AVC) to Normal MPEG4 Video...

As I said, it doesn't matter what you choose give 1024*576 a try.

You can't play 720p? What kind of computer do you have ?
What is the resolution of your monitor ?

I have a PC running on Windows XP SP2, Intel Celeron 2GHz processor, 768MB RAM. My monitor has a max. resolution of 1024x768... Dude, 720p is unplayable. Please suggest hardware upgrades to play HD 720p...?

A HW upgrade could consist of a new Display Adapter (and a new monitor).

I recently bought an Nvidia 8600GT at Newegg for about $40.
It's pretty good, it can accelerate H264 and take the load off the cpu, etc, etc.
Look for something similar. Research it before you buy, make sure it can
accelerate the video.

Since your monitor resolution is only 1024 horizontal, 1024*576 may be
a good choice. Fill the whole screen (width-wise) without having to resize
on the fly.
