Geohot follows through on promise, 'OtherOS' still available with firmware update

article published on 8 April, 2010

As promised earlier this month, hacker Geohot has made it so users can continue to use the OtherOS feature stripped by Sony with firmware update v3.21. Reads geohot's blog post: OtherOS Supported on "3.21OO" Here is a video demoing my "custom firmware". It's not any sort of version string change; I would have added something showing off the new features of 3.21, but oh wait, there aren't any. ... [ read the full article ]

A Proxy Bypass would/should work for now and possibly a while...just as it does for 3.15 FW users to be able to still get online and not need 3.21 but as I say ~ Until I have it running on a piece of hardware. THAT'S when I'll believe it.

Sony have taken away OtherOS because of what geohot is doing? I was thinking of getting another PS3 after switching to Xbox (Prefer the controller for FPS, like the in-game music for every game, I preferred the fact it was hackable before the PS3 and when I bought the Xbox, prepaid cards were non-existant on the PS3 so the world of DLC was closed to me, don't ask.) but now Sony can stick it up their corporate asses. They are as bad as M$.

Oh I wasn't aware that 3.15 users could still get online. That's pretty similar to those on psp running custom firmwares and still playing online. If Ps3 follows that same route and gets cracked wide open (like the psp), things could turn out very badly for sony.

A lot of people aren't happy with this guy doing this stuff on the PS3.

Due to the PSP not having anything released on it anymore by game companies.

The same could happen for the PS3.

If so I'll just go back to to PC the 360 is a waste of time.

Big shame if this goes like this.

This is Stupid of Sony; I was just beginning to enjoy PS3 Home and more games are finally becoming available for my PS3. I make a pretty good income and buy my games retail; No more. I have no interest in Hacking my system but I am Pissed that Sony stole my Other O/S feature and have not logged-in or purchased a game since the announcement. Good job of alienating your customers Sony.

The other-OS isn't an feature it's never been listed as a feature it's always been a hiden one.

It's also only a feature to the Gen 1/2 PS3's the slim PS3's don't have it anyway.

It's unknown if this geohot firmware will even work on slims, I actually hope not really, and it will end there.

As geohot firmware only came about from him hacking the other-OS feature in the Gen 1/2 PS3's with 1.80 firmware.

the Other O/S feature was one of the main features that SONY cited during the PS3 Rollout and was used to classify the Game Console as a computer.

Never has been cited feature.

review sites seen it and asked Sony what it was about.

Sony had told them what it was for which was to allow for homebrew via Linux but that's all been destroyed now.

That would be what your talking about.

look around the net look up ads you'll never see it as a feature in Sony's advertising for the PS3 or packages.

Wrong. The 'Other OS' feature is definitely advertised by Sony. It appears in the manual (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/osinstall.html) and on a page marketing the 'Other OS' feature (http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html).

Um, when has Sony ever used the PS3's user manual in a advertisement on TV or in magazine?

I'm talking about ADs at shops or in magazines or on TV etc not user manuals, that isn't advertising.

You'll see that it's never been an advertised feature in an AD.

Stuff advertised have been playing games, photos, videos, web access etc.

which the PS3 does without needing Linux installed.

Content does not need to be published in an ad in order to be considered advertising/marketing material.

At the bottom of the linked page you will find the feature. Many of the Ads run in 2007 referencing the feature are no longer posted on the net but this article from that era makes reference to it.
