The Good, The Bad and The Media?

Hey all,
Well I've spent hours upons hours researching DVD media and I'm still at a general loss. I know that Ritek is good, princo is bad, but what else? I have a Lite-ON 411s and a bunch of media that I probably should not have purchased. I wanna know which media brands have the best life span. The media that I have right now seems good, 20 burnt, 0 coasters, but I'm skeptical about the life span of it. I did a DVDInfo in it and found out that it is some generally low grad media, ji yuang or something. I wanna start backing up all this important data that I need to last me more then a few years so I wanna know which media to purchase.
I also read that my 411s did not like the Ritek media. Is this true? Do I have to doen grad the firmware? I have the FJ newest firmware on it right now.

Riteks arent good and princos arent bad, its not that simple. You need to find a disc that suit your needs. Id recommend Ritek certainly, but a branded one under the 4 main headings of:
Traxdata
RiData
Clone Disc
Arita

ok,
well my needs are long life and basically, I'm not rich ;)
so I am looking for decent media, not cheap, (around $1.60-1.80 / disc Canadian)
But I just want my burnt media to last until in an old man ( j/k i know it will only last 10 yrs, and that's for the good stuff)

As our buddy above says, those discs are worth considering, though they might be more than a decent Ritek. Try and find a RiData disc as these always work amazing and are guaranteed Grade A if bought from a reputable dealer.

So many people claim they are Ritek. Is it true the Piodata made from Pioneer are Ritek as well?. I heard good comments from some friends

I didnt believe so. I believe that the OEM manufactured PioData from Pioneer are produced Taiyo Yuden. However, i have also seen Ritek GO4 dye on the PioData discs in the UK? Im waiting clarification on it

I just got some Ritek dvd+r how do I know what grade they? I should have came here first before I got my dvd+r the more you know the better off you are. Any way how do you tell what grade they are and is Ritek and Ridata the same thing ? Thanks

Hello Nephilim! what's up buddy!
Listen! what is the minimun speed talking of processor you recommend for burning movies?
how much ram? and what role does it play?
have heard different things about ram usage but looking at my system i can tell while burning movies the system does not use all the ram as many people say!
advise!

i know on my system Nero takes a good 100 mb itself. so i would say i would want at least 256 if ur not doin anything else while ur burning

I can tell you this. At 512MB of RAM, burning an 8x disc sometimes give me a few problems while running other programs. However, with 2GB of RAM, i can look at all the por...er....threads i want without a problem ;-)

I have dealt with both firms - service was faster than claimed and cheaper than the stores.
I have a HP DVD300n burner and have purchased DVD+R 4X RITEK ARITA BRANDED discs from Blank Media (50 Discs for $70.00 + taxes and delivery)

I WONDER IF THOSE RITEKS ARE ID RICOHJNP OR RITEKG04?
RITEKG04 ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH EITHER OF MY BURNERS
LITE ON LDW-411S & LG GSA-4081B
ANY CLUES WHY THIS IT IS HAPPENING?????

regardding flaker27,
what firmware version are you using? I heard that the second to newest version works with the G04's, but the newest one doesnt. I'm going to try a couple riteks and check this out on my 411s

that is the same firmware that i am using. it is the latest one. i have read that you have to downgrade the firmware on the 411s to the one previous to the fs0j ( i dont remember which one that is) for it to burn the riteks. I am currently waiting to get my hands on a coupel riteks to do this experiment my self. let me know if the firmware downgrade works for u.

hey Nephilim
what are the disadvantages/ dangers of moding the 411 to a 811? can u damage ur drive or anything? is it reversable?
im sure this is a stupid question, but i dont know anything about moding drives.

The mods tend work tremendously well and are a pretty simple process if you pay attention to what you're doing. I'm not sure if it's reversible since I've never worked with a Lite On burner. Personally, if I had a 411 I would have no qualms about using the mod.
I pm'd grogey regarding this thread and I'm sure she'll be more than happy to give you the complete skinny on the mod and the process :)
