Will help you in the fact that you get an idea of the type of the type of puzzles they throw at you. battling enemies I feel is not the same because you have basically 1 weapon same in all three games but the other 3 weapons and the 4 magic spells that go with them are different. Totally different fighting techniques since new weapons.
It is the most visually stunning game I've ever seen.
The only thing you need from the earlier games is the story, which, sadly enough, can be summarized thusly: "You want to kill people, the gods don't want you killing people, so you kill the gods. And some Titans."
The gameplay is ported over from the first God of War, with the requisite new material and graphical upgrade, so in short: no, you don't need to play the first two games (or the PSP game) because once you've played one, you've played them all.
I actually really disliked GoW2, mostly because they dumbed Kratos down. I mean, granted, he wasn't exactly Mr. Sunshine and Lollipops in the first game, anyway, but at least there was a sense stereoscopic 3D to his character instead of just a flat murderous plank of murderous fury and murder.
Not that we play those games for their stories, but anyway.
I'd still say play all of them, if for no other reason than to find new and interesting ways to de-limb and de-soul endless hordes of barbarian enemies while de-heroing your player character and desensitizing yourself to genocide. There's something creepily cathartic about the whole deal.
