PS3 HDMI Connection Problem to Samsung HDTV

Hi folks,

Was hoping someone could help me find a way to diagnose and fix a problem I've been having. I recently bought a slim PS3 and a Samsung T240HD TV. I move it between my bedroom and living room a few times a week so have to unplug all the cables. When I would plug the HDMI cable back into both devices, the TV would display "NO SIGNAL", I would then have to play around with the cable in the back of the TV until a picture appeared. My TV has 2 HDMI ports and the same thing happened when plugging the cable into both so I originally though that this was due to a faulty HDMI cable so I purchased a new one a few days ago.

It worked fine when I first plugged it into the TV but when I tried again the same "NO SIGNAL" message happened. After playing around with the cable I was still not able to get a picture and now the TV does not even recognize that my PS3 has been connected, it displays the message "There Is No Device Connected", when I plug it into both HDMI ports.

I have only the one TV in the house, and the PS3 is the only device I have which uses an HDMI connection, therefore I cannot find a way to diagnose if it is a faulty HDMI port on the PS3, two faulty HDMI ports on my TV, or just plain bad luck with HDMI cables.

I was hoping someone knew how to figure out the source of this problem in my situation and any way to fix it.

Also, does anyone know if I can buy a Component cable for the PS3 which will still play my games and Blu rays in full High Definition. And if this will upscale my DVDs and downloaded videos also.

Thanks very much

I have tried turning off both devices and back on and it still will not recognize them. The times it does recognize is only after I have moved around the cable until a picture appears.

Without having another device or TV with HDMI i dont think that there is much that you can do to ID the issue.
They easiest thing that you can do is to take both cables and the PS3 to a friends house with an HDTV to test it.

a year or so ago i have returned 2 WDTV at the same day and the employees in the shop tested another 3 WDTV and all of them had the same faulty HDMI input. Same way as you describe it.

Turn off the PS3, then turn it on by holding down the power button until it beeps at you three times...this will reset the video to defaults.

What is the picture that appears? Is it just a confirmation screen on the TV that shows there is something connected? How are you connecting the PS3 in the areas you are switching back and forth from? If you have a Component/Composite connection in the bedroom and an HDMI connection on the new HDTV then do as Killerbug described because this would be/solve the issue you are experiencing.

That happened to me on my Sony TV. Ended up being the HDMI cable. Try to reverse ends as in the side thats currently in the TV goes in the PS3. If that doesn't work, try a different HDMI cable.

You may also want to try to turn on the TV, switch to the right input, turn off the TV, turn it on again and wait 30 seconds and then turn on the PS3. Sometimes it takes the TV a while to initialize HDCP.

Thanks for all your help people. I tried a component cable and that worked fine, but I missed the DVD upscaling aspect. Also tried holding down the power to reset but it remained the same. What core2kid described works sometimes but even after buying another HDMI cable, I still got the No Signal sometimes. I'm pretty sure now that it is faulty HDMI ports on my TV and I just have to wriggle the cable until I get signal. Oh well, guess that means I have to buy another HDTV soon : )

Thanks folks

I doubt you'll have 2 or more faulty ports on your TV. You might want to try a high quality cable like those Monster ones and see if it works. If it does, then you can keep it or return it. I suggest returning it and buying one from ebay.

Haha I wish I could afford a 3DTV, but unfortunately I'll be sticking with the old HDTV (sorry core2kid haha). I did buy a better HDMI cable a couple weeks back, it was a TREX Digital that had 1080p+, 10.6 GBPS and 12 bit color with 1.3b HDMI high speed, and that ended up needing more playing with to get a picture.

I was thinking the same about it being unlikely that the 2 HDMI ports would be faulty, and it kills me to think I might have another faulty PS3 - if you read me old posts you'll know that I lost a PS3 and an Xbox 360 within the space of a few weeks. Guess I'll just have to put up with the cable fiddling until I get my 50 inch 3DTV, but then again I'll be playing the PS4 and Xbox 720 by that point haha.

Just stick with Component. 720p is fine on PS3 since most games run at that anyways.

Hi,

I recently had a similar problem with my Samsung LCD TV (it's a year and a half old, and of course I didn't buy the warranty). I was getting the same "no device connected" message when I was trying to hook up my cable using co-ax cable. I originally thought it was my cable box, so I traded the box in, but I still got the same message with the new box. I then hooked up the box to the tv with S-video cable and it worked. So I realized it must be the co-ax port on the tv. This is an expensive problem to fix, so not worth it. Bummer, I thought Samsung was a decent brand...
