I heard about the PS3 losing the Other OS feature and I was quite upset. I use that feature but not often. Then I heard about GeoHotz releasing his custom firmware for the PS3 which will bring back the Other OS feature. Nobody's heard from him since. Should I update and just lose the feature? Do you think anything will come out to upgrade and keep the feature?

You need to have a little patience, i know GeoHot promised a "CFW" and i am just as annoyed as everyone else with his ignorance, in not letting us know what is happening.
I haven't updated and wont, i would advice you to do the same thing, someone better than GeoHot will bring something out at some stage.

I guess I'll wait. I have a Slim PS3 that I use for online but I just hate to see this PS3 sitting there doing nothing while an ignorant dev tells us to wait for his CFW.

Well I don't have Linux installed right now. I just hate to lose a feature that I paid for.

Like air bags on a car. Go use them.
Im just kidding.
Seriously, you would think that any crack that required OS would be almost useless since most everyone has updated and the rest have a Slim. A real crack should not require OS.

Once the OtherOS-requiring crack develops an XMB crack and you guys start jumping on the bandwagon again, I'll link you guys back to this thread.
Seriously. It took until now to finally crack the PS3 at all. Now that it's happening, you're all crying about it taking too long. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. It's not like gaming is the be-all, end-all of your lives, and if you're seriously ticked over this, blame the people who actually took it away, not the person who 1.) did what you had wanted to happen for the longest time now, and 2) is still working on letting you continue to use what they took away, and 3) did and is doing all of it for free.
I find it ironic that people are calling him ignorant and junk when he's the one who had enough insight to crack it in the first place.

No, there is no reason to wait for GeoHot to do anything, he has given up. Just do the update and join one of the class-action lawsuits.
As for a crack, if we see a otherOS installer, it will probably only be a matter of days before we see an XMB installer. For that matter, we will probably see otherOS on the slim units if there is ever a working crack...because the best crack would be a PUP file just like any other update.

If you check on geohotz's twitter page you wll see he left a note saying he's not doing anything at the moment. But when he does start back up he will be working on the pad jailbreak, not the ps3!
So the ps3 is being put on the shelf by george. In fact no spammers have posted on his ps3 blog in 3 days now! George did say that you could upgrade to 3.21 and this cfw will enable otheros again, he even claimed that he may be able to enable it on slims. But now sony have released 3.30 and not a word from him.
So the timeline as I see it is a minimum 3 months wait, or even 6 months! So if you cannot live without onlne play then either upgrade and hope he can do something about the newer firmwares, or buy a new slim and use that.

Jaicrab is still in the game and shares everything.
Quote:
JaicraB Releases PS3 OtherOS Base Exploit and Source Code.
As a follow-up to his previous work, today JaicraB has updated his blog entry with a PS3 OtherOS Base Exploit and the related Source Code for PlayStation 3 developers.
This comes shortly after gow3forme shared a relatively larger PS3 OtherOS Exploit Module which seemed to be loaded (the command lsmod showed:
exploit 10497032 1 - loading 0x000000000012000 (P+)) but nothing appeared on the video.
To quote, roughly translated:
Good. Here you have a minimum base to build the otheros.bld. The BLD takes up 30 Kb and has functions to the HDD with ext2 to save the DUMP. The functions are described.
Call table incorporates LV1 and ASM functions. This ready to assemble the mechanism of the exploit. I hope this helps those concerned who did not know where to start. It has been compiled with the toolchain pdaXrom.

What?
If my choices are:
1.) Use the xbox xmb, and don't play games
2.) Play games
I will have to go with #2. Either that, or I would have gone with a 360 from the start...that way I could play games and have the XMB at the same time!
OtherOS is so sad...other than a few crummy linux distros, I only know of one true "OtherOS" operating system; and that is nothing but a low quality MPEG4 compressor. When sony sold us this feature, it was touted as being a way to use a hex-core cpu @ 3.2GHZ for whatever we wanted...and that never happened.

First off, its XBMC which stands for Xbox Media Center, not xmb which stands for Sony's Xross Media Bar. Second, you can do both on PS3 as well, you just won't have online play. I'm pretty sure you can't run XBMC on a 360 and have online gaming as well since the system would need to be jtagged. You can run a media center server on 360 but you can do the same on PS3.

Your correct in everything you said, XBMC has absolutely nothing to do with the 360, it is an Xbox1 media center that was ported to be used on, PC Linux/Windows and MacOS.
I don't have my PS3 updated and i wont be updating until Sony returns the OtherOS feature, or one of the circumventers figure a way for me to keep the OtherOS and update at the same time, also i can play all my games on firmware 3.15, i just recently completed Heavy Rain :)

My bad...with a name like "Xbox Media Center", I assumed that it had to be made by microsoft.
I have been trying to get resolution through the BBB, but sony is now just posting a form letter in response, so I just contacted a lawyer. I'm not going to settle for a free computer anymore...at this point I have mental damage; as I am now too paranoid to buy any electronic device for fear that the maker will remove core features at a later date without my permission...and without government intervention. If a small-time crook stole my linux computer, the police would arrest him...but sony steals a linux computer from millions of people, and they don't even have to read the BBB complaints! Thus, not only have I lost any shred of faith in corporations, I have lost all faith in the government, even in the few agencies that sometimes do good. Corporations and government run the world hand-in-hand, and against the masses...and they do so in plain view without fear. It is so depressing that I am not sure I want to keep living on this planet...or at least not in any NATO state.

The Xbox1 is was my favourite console, i had the Xecuter 2 mod chip and was able to install a wide variety of dashboards and play all types of Emulators, including the PS1 and N64, XBMC was my media center on the device and it was awesome back then, it can outperform the PS3 XMB on media playback.

Though i wish you all the best of luck as i have done to the other guys that have taken it to their lawyers, i honestly think it is a lost cause, we who want to keep Linux on our consoles are a minority, so we will be brushed aside, whilst other people are going for money, i just want my OtherOS and be able to play the one game i play online.
