Samsung has said they plan to invest $21 billion USD into new businesses such as solar cells, LED tech and even bio-pharmaceuticals.
The statement adds that the investment will help develop five new businesses for the company, add 45,000 jobs, and add $40 billion in additional revenue by 2020.

Hopefully now they can make their LED LCD's way less reflective, and greatly improve the poor viewing angle, that's what really stopped me from getting an LED.
Interesting to see how they will use bio-pharmaceuticals and solar cells in their TV's. Maybe well start to see available HDTV's higher than 1080p if their going to be investing that much. 7K x 4K anyone?

I think you mean better to use less energy then use more. Energy can't be created of destroyed, only transformed.
There is more energy from the sun falling on the planet in one second than human society uses in a whole year.. who says solar is a "waste of time" .. ALL our current energy sources (except nuclear) come either directly or indirectly from the sun.. where did the plants and animals that make up fossil fuels get their energy from?
Fossil fuels won't last forever.. in fact they are starting to run out now.. we have 20 years to get our act together or face the consequences.. well done Samsung for taking a bit of a lead in this.. we NEED cheap solar energy, small scale individual power sources.. not massive power stations full of huge mirrors run by greedy utility monopolies..
Mike.. you are right.. energy can't be made or lost only converted.. a side effect of converting energy from one form to another is loss.. mostly in the form of wasted heat.. once we solve our atmospheric pollution greenhouse effect problems by stopping burning fossil fuels like idiots we will then have to deal with the waste heat we will be creating in other ways causing a similar effect.. there is a maximum top end to the amount of energy we can use on this lump of rock before our waste heat starts to become a problem in it's own right.... So few people see the balancing act the climate and ecosystem runs.. we tamper mindlessly at our peril.. the earth that laid down those huge oil and coal deposits was very much warmer than our world now.. millions of years storing away carbon from the atmosphere reducing the surface temperature.. we worry about warming, in reality where we are at now is on a geological timescale pretty cold.. colder than the normal state of affairs.. do we like it cold or would we prefer 80% less people and a hot tropical paradise raining all the time? .. hmmm.. I'm tempted by steamy rainforest swamps myself.. less humans would be a good thing.

clearly you have no clue in physics my friend. if you did you'd know just how much energy can be obtained from the sun.the hard part is doing it in an efficient way that doesnt cover half a continent with solar cell covered fields
