I have the 74850c drive. I was going to buy the Vampire kit, but after doing more research I read that a full dump is no longer necessary for this drive because the laser calibration data is just test data from the manufacturer.
Since I no longer need to do a full dump I decided to try and use an old DIY probe I made from Bhetrick's guide; I actually remade it.
- I tested my serial port by itself in HyperTerminal and I tested the probe in HyperTerminal and they both work. I also tested the transistor and resistors..all good.
- JF shows my drive
- I select the same COM port I used in HyperTerminal: COM1
- I have drive in correct tray status, as far as I know...
- I've tried to probe the R707 hole, the 707 pad above the R707 hole, and the R52 hole
- I always get the same error. It says sending DVDkey request, then ***WARNING***Serial data is bad.
I'm not sure what else to try. I've had others tell me that it's near impossible to do without a CK3 for power and I've looked at dozens of forums regarding this issue, but nothing seems to work...
dude i had this same problem last nite the way i fixed it was going on my other computer which is windows xp cause the drivers i installed for the probe key extractor wernt working on windows 7. If u have windows 7 i recommend going on a computer with xp. I finally got mine working.
EDIt: also u have it on com1 its supposed to be on a different com the usb extractor for mine was COM8 i left mine on Com1 beforea and had exact same problem. Also make sure u dvd tray is half open or else u wont get a key.

Thanks for the response. I'm actually using my WinXP computer. I have to use COM1 because it's a serial probe I'm using. I also have another USB probe I made from a CA42 Nokia phone cable, but I can't get that to show anything in HyperTerminal so I'm not sure if it's working. I also get the same bad serial error with that one. The USB probe shows up under COM5.
Do you use a homemade probe too? I'm pretty sure the drive is in the correct tray status as well...I power the 360 on, unplug power to drive, manually eject tray all the way out, push tray half in, plug power back into drive. The tray remains half open with 360 powered on...
Thanks again for the help.
I just tried it again doing it that way and it's still a no-go...Bad serial data.
What else could it be? I can't figure it out...I've spent hours looking around for explanations...
How hard is it to solder the points instead of using the probe? I was trying to find something online that shows how to do it, but I haven't been very successful. I was confused as to what exactly needs to be soldered. I read something about not needing to worry about the R708 spots now either, just R707.

yah i use a homemade one bought it on ebay it works great. Maybe u didnt make it completely proper? i dont know only thing i can think of if ya want me to show u the one i bought it was only 8 dollars US. Also make sure u put it in the hole not on the silver part of R707 i did that the first time to but the LED light told me when i had a good connection. Put it in the hole.
EDIT: try installing these drivers i used http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V6MJJ5JF password is dontforget.
Also im guessing ur using jungle flasher? try this program maximus key xtractor it worked for my lite on 7 series drive. http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/xbox360pc/dvd/XtractorReader_V28.rar

I've been extremely busy lately, but I finally got a chance to try it out. Maximus key xtractor still gave me the same error. I don't want to dump $50 on a CK3 and Probe2 if I don't have to, but it seems like I'm not having much of a choice.
Check out these pictures. Maybe someone can see something I'm missing...
This one is showing my 360 with the correct tray status. (Green light is flashing)
This is a pic showing the setup for my homemade probe. You can see the spring I use to probe and the power source is an alligator clip attached to a wire coming from the 5v source of a molex.
Sorry to say, your information is wrong. You need to do a full dump. The data is NOT test data, where in the world did you read that? Links? You need to do a full dump for:
1.) Safe on xbox live
2.) Keep the laser calibration.
This has been proven. If you use the 707 method you will in fact burn out your laser much faster.

Here is a link regarding the calibration data...read a few posts down.
I read it in a couple of other places too but I can't remember the exact locations.
