You run a chance that the game won't work...thats why they suggest burning at 2.4 only. :)

Who is "they"?
The majority of us (those who've been following the scene for awhile and don't just "hit & run") burn at 4x or higher. The "burning slower is better" rule was debunked a long time ago.
Now, if someone is using crap media, never updates their burner firmware, and/or has a filthy console, then they may have to burn slower. Although that won't always help either.

Agreed. Well put bhetrick.
The myth of "Always Burn at 2.4x" is not always true. If your media and burner are rated higher.... burn at higher speeds! You can actually cause issues by forcing your burner to burn at slower rates with media that is rated higher. I burn at 8x (average around 6.5x) and have great success.

I've always burned at 2x because thats what I have been told to do. I haven't had any issues with my burner or discs at that rate.

Burn one at 4x or 8x and I guarantee you'll never set it at 2x again.

Again, all this will depend on your burner. Check and see what model you have. Your System Info -> Components -> CD-ROM will tell you.
It's always best to check for firmware updates for your burner. And don't worry about doing the update, it's not like doing the 360 firmware. For your pc it's just a couple of clicks and you're updated.

Good of you to point that out. The last thing we need is people trying to update/flash new firmware to their PC drive, posting "Please help!!! I can't get Jungle Flasher to detect my laptop's DVD drive".
