I am completely new to Xbox and by that I mean that not only is this my first Xbox 360, but it's my first Xbox, period. So, I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge but there seems to be a lot of basic knowledge I am lacking.
I got a Xbox 360 Arcade and started looking into my options to be able to play backups. A lot of the information was foreign to me so I figured out I needed to find out example what drive I have. I got a tool to dismantle the Xbox and I now know that I have a Lite-On 83850c that was made in May 2009.
I absolutely do not want to solder and fortunately it looks like I won't have to do that. However, I'm a bit lost as to exactly what I need to flash the drive's firmware. I have looked at tutorials but not only do they seem to vary quite a bit but they either have really lengthy lists of things I need or just start with all kinds of things already hooked up and explain I need to click a couple things on a program.
I have a computer with a "nVidia MCP61S + MCP61P" chipset. I have my Xbox in pieces, what is the bare minimum I need to flash the drive?
Sorry that I haven't figured this all out by myself but I want to get what I need but I don't want to track down a lot of things that are not really necessary and I don't really know one way or the other.
Thanks in advance!

You really don't need a whole lot for the hack. You need the hacked firmware, which would be the iXtreme LT (I think the latest is 1.1 but I personally don't have a liteon drive anymore). You also need a program called JungleFlasher. Go to this site, and you can get JungleFlasher from there, as well as the guide for using it. Read through that guide!! It's a pdf and on the left hand side just click on the LiteOn section, and they will give very detailed instructions on what to do. And nVidia chipsets are good, I've got them, and have flashed a lot of drives through it.
Since you're box was May `09, it's most likely a V1 drive, because V2 was around July/Aug. And if it is a V2 drive, you are going to have to require a few other things to flash it.
So ya, just go to that site, and it will be able to help with whatever you need done.

OMG. ALL LITE-ON virgin drives REQUIRE soldering. Tough luck. You need to do a full dump. I don't care if you have a 7xxx series lite-on. You have to solder and cut traces on the PCB. The 707 method is not safe on xbox live and doesn't dump the laser calibration.

Glad to have you back gameover9.

Reading through it now, thanks! It's a lot to digest though...

That's kind of what I mean by bare minimum. I don't care about Xbox live...
So, if I don't dump the laser calibration, flashing the firmware will wreck the laser calibration?
If I have to solder, I'm putting it back together and going back to not using it much... that's one reason I'm asking though. Some explanations make it sound like I have to do it one way, others say it another way. I just want the bare minimum to play backups, but if there's no way to get it working without soldering I'm in over my head.

Your drive won't last with the other method and you'll be replacing the laser all the time and get media disc read errors.

I was worried it might be something like that. I did try searching around before I posted here and I was seeing the heavily involved method with soldering and a less heavily involved method and then the just plug it into your computer method. Kind of threw me but I think I'm starting to gather some basic info and at least know what I needed to do if I had gone ahead with the solderless solution.
Thanks for the replies and I'm kind of thinking out loud here since I hope I can track these answers down (although finding specific and updated information is difficult for me since I'm completely new to the scene), but of course responses would be appreciated.
Assuming I get a good key, can I spoof that to another drive or will I still have calibration issues?
If I use the hard drive as much as possible can I prolong the life of the laser significantly?
Can I reset the Lite-on drive's firmware to stock or will I wreck the calibration and everything if I flash it?

If you spoof to a lite-on, you would need the Orig dump from that drive to keep the laser specs. If you spoof to a BenQ, no.

Thanks a lot, I was actually looking at this at this moment (BenQ): http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.37376 and trying to find out more information about it. I think that's the way to go then. Get the key, spoof it to the BenQ and assuming that works I'll use the BenQ and have a backup drive as well.

You're going to spend more money that way but it will work. Keep in mind it will only work if you're lite on is a 7xxx series or 8xxx V1

Thanks again for the responses... to my knowledge, all I'd need to buy is the actual drive for $30. I don't even have a solder kit right now and I don't know what I'd do if I ruined my only drive.
So, I'm thinking I dump the key first (verify it is a v1, which it should be), then order the BenQ and spoof that. If that goes well then I'm home free and if it doesn't at least I didn't screw up my Lite-On drive.
That's what I'm thinking now at least, I'll keep looking things up as I go...

If you want to play on Xbox Live, you may not want to order the BenQ drive, because I'm pretty sure the latest hacked firmware isn't released for the BenQ. Just the LiteOn's.

iXtreme LT 1.1 is definitely available for BenQ.

Lite Touch 1.1 is available for both the Lite-on and the Benq drives but spoofing drives is a no-no according to Team Jungle.
"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."
