Help...lost in a sea of information with a dusty Wii

Hi guys,
I did search to try to find the answers myself but the amount of information is just a bit too much and it's mostly too advanced from where I am.
I am in the UK and have a Jap Wii that is modded when it was bought 2-3 years ago (?). Unfortunately it was so long ago and I forgot what chip it is. I think it's a Wiikey. Also, according to wiidrive, it has either a GC2-D2B or GC2R-D2A chipset.
Anyway, I haven't touched it for a while and now my nephew wants to take it away which is fine but as it's modded, I'm sure he can't just run a update when you boot up a game bought in here and therefore he will not be able to play any games he's got.
So, without opening it, how do I acertain what chip it has? My nephew uses genuine games so most importantly I need it to be able to play UK games.
Let say it's a Wiikey, is it possible to update the firmware so it runs the latest UK games?
This is embarassing as I used to mod PS2s with my eyes closed...good old day when I was unemployed....
Any help will be much appreciated...

Well, since you have a D2A or D2B Modchip, you may have the wiikey installed, you won't have the D2C Modchip installed, but the only way to know for sure is to open the wii up & check inside.
Try running the disc from this page to change the wiikey's settings:

If you can get this to run you'll know it's a wiikey. But really, if you want the best brick protection, you can either use the wii brick blocker, on this page: http://www.ozmodchipsfaq.com/wiki/index....ith_your_wiiKey
If you are on the 3.0 firmware it might make this difficult, but give it a try to see if you have a wiikey. If it doesn't work you'll have to open up your wii.

Really, which modchip you have is irreverent. No update from a game disk that matches the wii's region will negatively effect a modchip.
But since you have a japanese wii and want to play UK games then all game disks can cause problems, regardless of which modchip you have.
Additionally, if you update the wii to 4.2 then ALL non-japanese games will be blocked when trying to run them with a modchip. Only softmod methods will be able to run UK games.
My recommendation is to forget about the modchip. Update the wii online and then softmod it. Softmodding will block any updates from the disks (no risk of bricking that way) and bypass the region check.

Thanks for your advice, 12137 & penguin98.
Burnt the iso for the wiikey setting (only a small imgage?!?).......I burnt it at 1X speed on a 16X DVDR but Wii doesn't recognise it. Does that mean it's not wiikey?
What else can I try?
I think penguin's suggestion on using softmod is suitable for what I want it for so may give it a try.
What softmod would you recommend?
