My 360 had the RROD for a while. I did the x-clamp fix, and it was running perfectly for exactly 1 month.

Now I have E74.

Can you guys clearly explain non-reflow/heatgun methods?
Like putting pressure on the chip, or pennies?
I don't see a thread that clearly explains how to do these things.

+1, you need a reflow as infam0us says. Things like the penny trick or the towel trick will just break your xbox more.

Ok, I guess I'll look into buying a heat gun. They're not as expensive as I thought.

no offense, but all you guys and your heat guns amaze me. youre going to spend the same amount on a heat gun, in which you cant control the rate of air being blown out, the temperature of the air, or anything really. instead, you could send your console off to someone to be properly reflowed which will last much longer and have a more positive result. but to each their own i suppose.

i guess if you use this logic, the next time i get a flat tire, i will just put some duct-tape over it instead of getting it properly patched/plugged or having the tire replaced.

LOL, I know what you are saying Wabash, but not everyone can afford to pay £40-50 for a reflow or £250+ for a reflow station. I have only every had 2 returns (so far) and ive been doing these for some time now. If I had access to a reflow station (or at least reflows for about £20 a pop), then that would be my route, but I don't so Heat Gun it is. If i were to get a reflow, it would cost me £50 a go and have to pay P&P and endure a weeks wait. I wouldn't be able to charge much on top of that.

I think maybe a tire-weld analogy would of been better, the x-clamp fix alone would be the duct tape one :D

but what, a good heat gun costs about 20-30 USD here. and a reflow can be found at rates around 30-50. so why not spend the extra 10-20 dollars and get it done properly.

My heat gun cost me £13 from wilkinson in the UK, which is a one off cost, a reflow would cost 4 times that amount for one xbox. Dont get me wrong, I agree a reflow is the way forward if you can get someone to do them. If i lived near you, you would be getting a sh*t load of my business

It's very satisfying to fix something yourself then paying someone else to.
Getting someone to reflow your 360 can be very expensive if you have to use a repair shop. Some computer repair places charge ?100-?200 to remove viruses or spyware.
I would much rather get my current 360 reflowed properly but don't know anyone in Ireland offering that service so have ordered a heat gun. Shame on me I guess.

how in the world does virus removal even compare to xbox 360 reflow? unless youre thinking a trojan horse or some other worm got into your console via xbox LIVE and caused the solder joints to break, lol.

and yea, it is satisfying to fix something yourself, but i would rather know that it is fixed properly (as close as properly can be without sending to MS for repair), than hope i did it right and have it break again a few weeks/month down the road.

and i am very sure you can find someone that does reflows in ireland. it is HIGHLY unlikely that there is not a single person in that entire country that does it. i would venture out on a limb and guess there are 5+ in dublin alone.

Couldn't have missed my point more. Was pointing out what a rip off many repair shops can be. Not comparing virus removal to 360 reflowing.

I agree and if I lived near you I would be sending my 360 your way.

Yeah probably is someone but I couldn't find him.
I agree 100% it's better to pay a few extra quid to get your 360 reflowed properly but not everyone has a wabashman living near by but we try and get by the best we can anyway :)

The only ones I've ever had come back after heat gunning were a couple of older boards that had e74s. I heat gunned again to get them back to life then did a 12v fan mod and havent had any more problems from them. From what I've seen, x-clamp replacement + heat gunning + AS5 + 12v fan mod = permanent fix.

I've got several going on 2 years now that have been heat gunned without issue (and most actually without the fan mod). Sure the reflow station you can more accurately control air flow and temperatures but isnt it still just basically hot air? I dont think there's as much of a difference in the outcome as some people make it out to be (especially for the home user who wants to fix their 1 system on their own)

Ok well, I just happened to be in home depot for something unrelated, and saw the wagner heat gun that w00ly uses for $22 so I said awesome, i'm here, i'll get it, don't have to wait for someone to ship it (was gonna buy online)

thanks for the advice but yeah, there's a sense of accomplishment doing it yourself, after flashing and then doing my first x-clamp it got me confident around the innards of a 360 and now I have no problem adding this heatgun bit to the process, it feels good being able to do something yourself

Ok I'm back.

Followed w00ly's video tutorial exactly.
(Thought I'll admit one thing I didn't do exactly. Call me idiotic and reckless but I didn't completely clean all the thermal paste off the dies before using the heatgun. I got as much off as I could considering I had no alcohol or goo gone, but they were far from sparkling.)

Anyways, after doing the 1 min on the back on low, and 4 mins. on the chips on high, then waiting 30 mins. I put the x-clamp fix and heatsinks back on, plugged it in, and voila, booted right up.

Now hopefully it stays that way for a while, if I get some extra money I'll try to buy some talismoon fans.

Thanks w00ly! Excellent tutorial, worked fine for me so far.

IMO i wouldnt waste the $$ on the whisper fans, they arent much better than stock ones. just do the 12v mod the proper way (dont use dvd power as 12v source).

hrm, i posted but it didnt post it...AD must hate me now. but anyways, you could always add a potentiometer in to adjust the fan speed manually. i did that with my jtag with a second fan that can be seen HERE

The whisper fans advertise
Air flow: 46CFM - 68CFM Nitro Mode - Original Fan: 29CFM
Out of curiosity why shouldn't you use the Dvd power as source?
I usually leave the lagacy on 5volts and play from the HDD. 12v is too loud.

I dont use the DVD power as source because I want the DVD to get however much power it needs to run properly...they're prone to fail as it is. This is the source I connect to for 12v: http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j9/CornWallis13/xbox5.jpg It's nice and easy to solder to and it's right at the power supply so the voltage drop is negligible. Also it's fairly easy to add a potentiometer wabash said to tune the speed or even easier: add a double pole switch. Connect one pole to 12v and the other to 5v (with common running to fan power) and you're good to go.

Thanks w00ly always glad to learn. Have already ordered a legacy but maybe next time I will give this a go.
