Microsoft: We will sell 30 million Windows Phone 7 devices by end of 2011

article published on 27 May, 2010

Microsoft has set some pretty high ambitions for its upcoming Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system, saying they are aiming to sell 30 million devices with the OS installed by the end of 2011. The software giant estimates that 40 percent of all mobile phones sold next year will be smartphones, and it seems they want a large piece of that pie. Currently, only 15 percent of all ... [ read the full article ]

LOL...30 million? From the sounds of it so far, they would be lucky to sell 1 million of these things.

The more I use Android on my HTC Touch/Vogue, the more I see how crappy WinMo 6.5.* was. I used to think it was the shit, reluctant to dive into Android, but now I'm so glad I did :)

I'm really not expecting much out of this WinMo 7.

Yeah...I remember the days when WinMo was the king too...but that was when WinMo was almost as open as an unRooted Android.

My 2 year plan on my WinMo 6.1 phone was up so I was very interested in this WinMo7 phone. I went over to their forum and poked around a bit and tried to see what it was all going to be about.
Turns out that that phone is really just a Windows version of the iPhone complete with total lockdown and crappy specs.
I mean, it doesn't come out until the end of the year and already there are phones with better specs than it.
MS has got a lot riding on this phone and it's possible that it's popular to the masses. God knows they'll by anything that's "Cool". But I just didn't see it. It seemed like not enough and way too late.
They want to integrate everything but by the time they release the phone all of their integrating will be obsolete and there will be no way to change to something else.
It will be "cool for the kids", but it just doesn't seem to be ready for the big time.

I got an Evo.

the Windows 7 Mobile is very unappealing. it wont be a success Microsoft thinks it will be.

i have a firm belief, that some people will like it, but the mass majority will find it plain, boring looking. hopefully htc will make a User Interface to go over the lousy looking one that Msoft spend millions designing so it will be more visually appealing.

Isn't that what the Kin was developed for?

I had WinMo 6 and moved on to the iPhone. There are so many things better, even in the "locked" environment that is Apple. I see good things from Android too.

Yeah, cool for the kids... with all sorts of gaming connections and Facebook and all the Music stuff with Zune and all. None of which appeals to me in the least...
But nothing for Exchange and it seems as if the business use side of this phone is sorta out the window.

I think the Kin is mostly for social networking; the included memory isn't sufficient to use the thing as a Zune. Actually, I am not sure this phone appeals to kids at all. I think that the real target is parents looking to surprise their children with new phones...the verizon rep gives them a long speach about how this phone has everything their kids want, and that only kids can understand it, so there is no reason to explain, and they should just buy it. I think most kids would rather have an Android or even an iPhone...but maybe I just think that because I want to have hope for the future.

if they made a phone with a user interface similar to the Xbox 360. then i could see potential. but they made it so boring with the tile look. i just see it as a bad investment.

and as much as i hate to say it. even tho Droid looks neat. its somewhat apple like to me in terms of you dont have free roaming to get custom apps like u can on WinMo 6.1 and 6.5... granted u can't get the cool apps iphone and droid have. there is a huge community that use WinMo 6.1 and 6.5

While there is an Android Market with almost no restrictions (other than porn), you can also download and install apps much like you would on a (pre-7) winmo phone. You can even install unsigned apps without rooting.
