Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) has announced the launch of HyDrive, the world's first SSD (solid state drive) embedded optical disc drive. The company says the first drives will be available in August 2010. First generation drives will have either 32GB or 64GB SSDs, with second generation drives having up to 256GB SSDs. I'm guessing this is some SSD drive packaged with a DVD (or Blu-Ray?) drive? Hrm...seems like I'd prefer to keep those separate because optical drives are more prone to failure than SSDs.

I guess the SSD is automatically doing some read ahead caching for the optical disk...but if a disk is sufficiently scratched up then chances are that no amount of read ahead caching is going to help you...it would all have to be superficial scratches.

Honestly...I need to time my Windows 7 boot with a OCZ SSD, but I wanna say mine is actually maybe 5-10s faster.
