article published on 3 June, 2010

Sprint's HTC EVO 4G, the highly reviewed Android phone, goes on sale tomorrow but that hasn't stopped Wal-Mart from offering the phone for $199 USD (same price as other retailers) while waiving the $100 rebate, making it easier for consumers to purchase the phone. Best Buy and Radio Shack recently announced similar moves. Sprint also announced a broad, expensive ad campaign highlighting ... [ read the full article ]

That Wally World would even sell this phone is interesting to me. Just make sure that your phone is legit, and not some clone from China!! :)

Just stopped by a Sprint kiosk this morning... was hope for some kind of weekend promotion, but nothing.... I could get them to wave the activation fee, but they still insist on the mail-in-rebate....

as much as I hate to do it, I'm gonna grab the phone from Best Buy... as long as I can get them to wave the activation fee well....

Just bought my EVO from Best Buy Mobile. The Sprint kiosk was willing to wave the activation fee, but could do anything with the mir.

Best buy had no mir (as stated in the article) but said they couldn't wave the activation fee ($36), however the sprint rep was there this morning at the best buy location and after talking to him he was able to post a $30 credit to the next bill to help cover the fee. so $6 for not dealing with a mir... good enough for me....

best buy was down to 2 phones when i got there (around 1pm)... they started with 12.
the sprint kiosk started with 25 and was down to 6 by 3pm.

one important note... whomever you buy your EVO thru, they are going to want to 'set it up' for you... thats fine and all, but don't let them update it for you. right now you can root the evo, but sprint has an over-the-air update out already which may kill you chances of rooting.

The update is supposed to fix a problem with the bundled sd card not having the right permissions for you to use it, but that is a non issue... all you have to do is go into settings, sd card, then unmount it, format it, and remount it... all fixed, no over-the-air root blocking update needed.

note, you can test your provided sd card with google earth, if it says that it needs an sd card
to run, then you do have the wrong access permissions on you card (earth wouldn't run on mine
out of the box) however after formating, earth runs fine....

anyway, I'm off to root my phone.... perhaps even try a 2.2 install and try out the wifi tethering...

have a good one,
-JamK
