Ok so I found a PS3 for 100 bucks, but theres a catch, it doesnt do any thing but give you this error code 80010006. Heres what the guy says on his link -
I have an 80 gb ps3 in great condition. It is the backwards compatible one with 4 usb ports and all of the memory card slots on it. My son tried updating the OS for it and it gave some error code and we cant seem to figure it out. We called sony and they want a little over 250 dollars to repair it so we just bought another one. Ever since the failed update the bluray drive wont boot the discs we put into it. Called sony again, and they said its probably an issue with the drive and could be fixed with the update but they are not sure until they have it. No point in keeping it now. If you are technical savy, you may be able to figure out how to install the new OS. Call or text me, as I dont respond to emails from craigslist.
Should I buy this? Is there any chance I would end up with a working PS3 for cheap?
Probably a good bet; these things can often be fixed by cleaning the drive with a PC, then doing the update from a USB drive.
That said, there is a lot to be said for the slimlines now that otherOS is gone. Even if this system is a quick-fix, you don't know if it will still work a week later. We know that a kid was using it, so it probably got a lot of use & abuse. Plus, all the backwards compatible models had high YLOD rates to begin with. Plus, you don't know if this guy is telling the truth; maybe they were trying the update to try to fix another problem.
If you do buy it and get it working, I would recommend doing the fan speed mod and the memory cooling mod to make sure it keeps working.
