If you still have the fimware that came from the drive you can use Jungle Flasher to put it back on as original, but if you send it back to them with any marks on it where it opens or with the sticker that goes on the front of the console behind the face plate its a silver strip placed verticaly over the join with Microsoft written on it, if its not there you can't send it back to Microsoft for a repair.
Here is a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVWmN7BTt2M&feature=related buy the xecuter kit which is pretty good by all accounts and comes with all the things you will need, its about £15 and easy enough to install, plus if your doing it yourself you wont have to reflash your drive.

It's an easy repair mate honestly buy a kit, they have everything you need in them you wont need to send it back to microsoft or reflash your drive. Fit the kit power back on and you will still be able to play your copied discs it's the simpliest way mate, your not going to be able to send it back to microsoft without that sticker.
I personally haven't sent a system back yet, but I've heard that if you send in a system, and its rejected by MS, you're on the hook for all shipping and receiving costs.... which means you'll have to pay to get it back from the post office... I don't know how much something like that would cost though...?

Probably £10 each way seems to be how much it costs to ship one in the UK atleast
