HP will release updated WebOS, new Palm devices next year

article published on 18 June, 2010

PreCentral has revealed this week that HP, which recently acquired the struggling smartphone maker Palm for $1.2 billion, is planning on releasing new Palm smartphone devices next year, as well as an updated WebOS mobile operating system. Palm had put itself up for sale in March after it became clear that the company's phones were not selling and it only had enough cash to last the next ... [ read the full article ]

So much for palm OS...now that HP software engineers have had their hands on it, it will be as terrible as their printer drivers.

Wow. Palm's not out of the game yet. WebOS is generally attractive to developers... and now apps will be subsidized in an App Sale promotion. http://briefmobile.com/webos-app-sale-everything-50-off

Exciting news... I cant wait to see the next WebOS device. Hopefully its bigger and less turtle-shaped.

Palm is completely out of the game. They got purchased by HP...palm is no more. If you think that Palm had bad programmers, just look at the HP team. WebOS didn't have much chance when it was owned by Palm...now that it is an HP product, that tiny shred of a chance is gone. And no, it is not appealing to developers...
-Hardware developers don't want to pay for an OS...especially one made by a rival company.
-Software developers want a userbase to sell to...a userbase like you see with Apple and Android devices.

Read a review of competing OS'...then post your drivel again...I use Android and wouldn't give it up for anything.

I still have my Palm IIIx, and its cousin, the TRGpro, and for my money, the TRGpro is irreplaceable. I have many dozens of novels on it and all my information. Meanwhile, HP products in general have a history of problems. I like their idea of removable hard drives, but....

Well actually I've found that anyone will argue anything. Making anything "arguable".
That said, after using all three major smartphone OS systems, I can say that all things being equal (hardware wise). I'd pick the WebOS device. Now, mind you, the Pre hardware is pitifully underpowered and that kind of ruins the whole package. But I even prefer the feel of the pre in my hand. My main phone is the Pre now. Is that arguable enough? I'm not in the mood to go into specifics to try to sway any fanboys one way or the other.

That's weird. My wife has a friend who works at Palm. She still has a job and still works for Palm. Just because a company buys another company it doesn't mean they trash the brand. Owning a company doesn't necessarily mean that company is gone. An example of this relationship... GM owned Saturn (well they created it anyway), but Saturn was a completely self contained manufacturer.

Whatever, I like WebOS and I hope it continues to improve. It is an alternative to the other OS options. Viva la difference. Life would be boring if everyone became a particular fruit.
