Assuming you know all the ways to fix an xbox(towel trick, penny trick, heat gun trick ece...) the best way to get a xbox 360 cheaper is to go to the pawn shop and ask if they have any broken systems. Ask them if they know whats wrong with. Usually they will say it got the 3 rings of death.

What ever they say you will what to check the hidden error message still.(sync button and press eject) Make sure it Does Not flash 0020.(<-unknown error)this error means any thing could be wrong with it. All other errors should be fix able.

I just did this thinking i was going to have to put the heat gun to the chips but when i got home the system booted up normally but at the pawn shop the system showed 3 red lights. One day later i try a game disc and found that the drive was broken. Luckily i had a spare drive. i change the key on the dvd drive to my new xbox motherboard any everything is 100%

The broken xbox cost me $30.00 gold live card cost me $10.00. Lucking up on the xbox showing 3 red lights at the pawn shop and green at my house and having the exact same dvd drive as spare......priceless

Also xbox lets you use a usb as storage now, it just does not get any better.

good tip...i've bought many broken ones off craigslist and fixed them with the heatgun. Both of my personal ones that got banned in the last banwave were replaced that way :) I kicked myself for having paid retail for the original 2 lol
