Hi, my faulty 40gb PS3 won't read disks but it still gets to the menu screen and everything. Does it need a new laser? Any ideas?

Have you tried rebooting into debug mode? You can try a laser fix from there...if it works, you will know you need a new laser, plus you can keep using your current laser while you wait for shipping on the new one. Don't feel like writing out the guide right now, but google is your friend.
