Ok someone gave me their ps3 to fix and it has ylod, i looked up videos on youtube but the board is different in the video than on this ps3, it's an old model and the hdd slots in vertically instead of horizontally. I tried heatgunning it a bit but its still the same. I press the power button, it beeps and the light turns green, then the fan spins for a second and the light turns yellow, it beeps 3 times then you hear a click and it starts flashing red. I don't think its the power supply because it does the eject button thing and the fan goes 12v.
I've fixed a lot of rrod xbox's but i'm not too sure about ps3's
What different causes and fixes are there for ylod so I can rule out the problem?
From what I have seen, using an oven makes for a more reliable, long-lasting YLOD fix. After you are done with that, make sure the metal plate on the video chip is tight; if it is loose, you must remove it, clean it and the core below it, apply new thermal grease to the core, and glue the metal plate back in place, using one drop of superglue on each of the 4 square supports around the core. Make sure you don't loose those rubber pads that go between the metal plates and the ram chips and chipset...they don't work very well, but you will certainly have issues if they are missing. Also, the PSU makes various voltages...use a digital multimeter to double-check that they are all OK. If it still does not boot up, you can try pulling the hard drive...it should boot without it, and a bad drive could theoretically cause problems booting if it has an internal short.
