BDA approves BDXL quad-layer Blu-ray standard

article published on 28 June, 2010

Current Blu-ray players are not compatible with BDXL, and there are no players yet in the works with support for the new standard. When they do become available, BDXL players will support current single ... [ read the full article ]

Sounds about right the tech can do it but it needs heavy tweaking...I bet DVD could have gotten up to 20 or 30GB a disc with some tweaking.....

Ok so I should be able to get 100GB discs in 5 years for 5-15 a pop? MMmmmmmm might just be worth it >>

PS:the ps3 is now obsolete....heheheheheheheh :P

Son of a *****! They can make 100 layers blurays that work with current players, but they can't make a 4-layer that does the same? I'll be real pissed if my PS3 isn't compatible with the 4-layers disks that Sony said it was compatible with.

oh thats the way they want to get you hooked next will be the ps4 and it will play the 4 layer but it wont be backwards compatable... this is so sad think of all those who jumped off the dvd band wagon and finally broke down to buy the ps3 or blueray vers. 1 so they could watch all the movies in HD and now the 3d hd will change everything the media the players and the format to some new thing give them 6 months they will move on to another layer we as consumers should tell them enough is enough 50 gb files are big enough and we want the need to buy more to stop also I want them to stop with the stand by mode if lightning hits its still on and thats when they fry... rarely does anything fry when its off ..... I turn off all my toys and the lights at night and it looks like a christmas tree is running in stand by the only ones who win are the power companies....

Things like this, if they hit retail movies, will go Blu-Ray more harm than good because it forces everyone who wants to watch new Blu-Rays to buy a new player.

With the exception of copy protections a 1st generation DVD player will play a DVD released today. Because of this flexibility (and the cheap prices of DVDs/players) DVDs remain a widely used medium.

If the BDA wants Blu-Rays to take over DVDs they shouldn't be pulling stupid moves like this.

Agreed, however I doubt they would make all movies using these disk. If they do, then that's just plain BS. We need to get more competition out there so prices go down, and they won't pull this crap on us. I had a feeling something like this was going to happen once HD-DVD left and Blu-ray had no competition anymore.

Don't get me wrong...I certainly want larger disks...but I was promised a 100 layer, 25,000GB disk that works with my PS3...not a 4 layer, 128GB disk that does not work with anything.

im sure with an FW update. PS3 will handle the new media. the BD Drive simply has to be aware that there is a forth layer.

unless this disc breaks laser compatibility there really shouldn't be an issue.

That is just what I'm thinking...if changing the whole format makes it slightly cheaper to make the disks, I am sure hollywood will push "Bluer-Ray".

THIS ARTICLE IS MISLEADING! BDXL is only for BD-R and BD-RE (writable and re-writable) formats, not for BD-ROM format. There will never be 100 or 128GB movies, so this doesn't affect current players and has no relationship to 3D. It might be used in future PC drives for data storage, or more likely in professional archiving equipment (i.e. for storing broadcast video footage, etc.).

^^^ Agreed, No, it will not work with a PS3. But so what, we dont have a BD burner in the PS3 anyway. The Mass storage standard is only for burnning, not Pressing. The TDK 4 layer 100g is/will be the general public standard. The XL standard is aimed at "commercial segments such as broadcasting, medical and document imaging enterprises with significant archiving needs". But please continue to freek out.
