I have the probe and connectivity kit. This is my first time modding a 9x series drive. I am confused as to how much of the trace we are supposed to cut on the upper area. Using this tutorial http://www.elitemodscene.com/wiki/index....ite-ON_firmware I see in the very top picture that there is a yellow line indicating the area of interest, then just below that the whole dang area is scraped up as well as the area surrounding the little circle. What exactly are we doing here? Are we scraping and cutting the whole area away between the 2 points as well as the area around the little circle? Or is this merely what this guy accidentally did while trying to remove the paint from the area? I got this far already but Im not getting any reading and I dont want to cut too deep. Any suggestions?
Also, I would like to add that I dont plan on even using this drive. It is being replaced with a benq, do I need to do all of this just to get the key?
yes you need to do all of this to read the key .
where the upper yello line is just cut the trace on both sides od the via making sure to go all the way through the trace
snickle, that "the little circle" you refer to is called a "via".
1) Scrape away the green silicone to reveal the copper traces underneath.
***The whole point is to disconnect the via from the main trace that it's connected to. (There are 2 vias, one by each yellow line).
2) Now use an X-acto knife or razor blade to cut the vias from the main traces.
So the procedure is:
Scrape the traces (X-acto/razor blade)
Disconnect the vias (X-acto/razor blade)
Dump the firmware (Jungle Flasher)
Flash new firmware (Jungle Flasher)
Re-connect the vias (soldering iron)
Play burned games (ON VERBATIM DVD+R DL!!!!)

Excellent eebeejay.. I was struggling to figure out what the via was. I didnt want to sound like an idiot asking. Thank You very much, your explanation is very clear. One more question though, does it matter if I mess up and damage the vias seeing as I dont even care about the drive? What Im getting at is, even if I massacred the traces by scraping them, can I still get the key off?

I see. You'd rather sound like an idiot telling us that you didn't know what it was, after you found out what it was. LOL. I didn't know what it was until the Lite-Ons came out. (Don't tell anyone that I told you that).

Don't scrape the via (I never do), just the traces. Just keep scraping very lightly and you'll be fine.
because that is the kit that I have. I noticed that the resistor gets very hot while trying to read the key. Am I doing something wrong? I still cannot read the key.
Sounds like you have a short circuit. I believe if B isnt cut fully A shorts to ground. The easiest way to check is to get a multimeter that has a continuity tester. Then you can probe on either side of the cuts: if it beeps then you have continuity and you need to cut more
I do not need to cut all these traces and use alligator clips to simply get the key? I also have one of those usb extractors that is pictured in the first post. All I want is the key, then I will drop kick this drive down the street.
