Android gaining on iOS in international market share

article published on 30 June, 2010

Apple may not want to admit it, but the Android OS has already surpassed their iOS in smartphone market share in the United States (by some accounts), and is catching up internationally. AdMob, the mobile analytics and tracking firm that was recently purchased by Google, has released their latest mobile metrics report, which is a "monthly snapshot of the smartphone industry based on data ... [ read the full article ]

I think by most, accurate accounts, iOS phones still outnumber Android in the US. It is interesting to see how the Android market kills models in a matter of weeks, it shows how dynamic things currently are for Android phone development.

Lets see. Aren't the numbers a bit skewed here. Admob is owned by Google. And lets see, doesn't Google give away one phone free with everyone you purchase. So lets see, the numbers are actually only half of what they say they are. But then again, Google and their fanboys always talk like the numbers are higher than they really are.

WOW google gives away one phone free with every purchase?? That's news to me?? Perhaps your talking about Verizon's "buy 1 smart phone get 1 free" deal. but note it never says google.
And yes I do think these numbers are gonna be skewed, but I do believe the Android OS is catching the iOS

Android is catching up fast, and apple's supply issues are not helping matters. So far, about 80% of the people who got an iphone4 are switching from an older iPhone. That means that they have gotten almost no market share from this release. On top of that, no one is willing to buy a 3GS anymore since it is outdated now (it was outdated when it was new, but that is another story). On the other side of the isle is android; offering a huge selection of phones on every carrier, and with various budgets and performance needs addressed by different models. Some phones do have supply shortages, but that seems to be limited mostly to the EVO...it isn't difficult to buy an incredible...no lines, no fist fights.

That BOGO deal is great if you have someone else that needs one in you immediate family, but if you get that deal, you now have two contracts for two years each, and you cannot buy the phone for someone else; it will be billed to your account. Because of this, most of those bogo offers go unused. My dad and I both bought the droid at about the same time, and they were offering bogo on it. We both need to write off our phones, and thus must have the bills in our own names. Because of this, we both had to buy the phone; I could not get the bogo deal for him, even if he signed the contract. Rest assured that no one is taking the BOGO deal just to have an extra phone as a backup or something.

Im guessing your an Apple fan boy by that post. Making statements like that arent going to give you any credibility in your argument.

First, as pointed out the BOGO deal is not android exclusive, and even if it was, how does that skew data? It doesnt matter how some one got there phone regardless of what OS it runs. If that phones activated and in use, then it still counts as one person using that OS.

Secondly, could it be the fact that unlike iOS which is exclusive to 2 phones, Android is gaining ground because it is offered on a variety of devices across all 3 major carriers in the US?

Third, could it be the larger selection of free apps? Could it be the fact theres a larger selection of free apps on android?

That may apply in some cases, but lets think about this here. Android and iOS require a data plan so I dont see that many people buying a phone that requires a $30 data plan and never use it. Not to mention the admob apps are built into the apps themselves and not webpages, if you ever load an app with an add, you were a factor in there stats at one time or another.
