I had installed a new UMD drive into my psp, but it would seem this drive is malfunctioning. It freezes the psp when trying to load a UMD and the drive spins weather or not a Disc is in. It only quiets down after a few minutes of idle play.

So am asking; Is it possible bad luck, purchasing a bad Drive and all, or could i of messed up the installation?

any of you have a similar issue after installing a UMD drive?

Could be either one of these. I don't know about your personal skill level, so the last thing isn't completely out of the picture. But considering how many people here come up with problems after installing a new drive you might've gotten a faulty one.
Seems I was kind of lucky with my drive.
Try re-installing it and if it still reacts that way return it.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Well what im worried about is that its not the UMD drive but the motherboard. Is it possible for a psp with a faulty motherboard to be fully functional, minus reading umds?

Yes. Actually when I got my PSP it had a defective UMD drive (more specific: a defective/dying laser) and every time I put an UMD in it it tried to load the UMD, with video UMDs I even got the starting screen. With games I could hear the motor spin and I got the loading rings, but eventually got an error message.
I could play ISO games off the memory stick without problems and everything else worked fine.

Ahh, you see i dont get to any load screens, the drive always spins and the laser continuously tracks inward. The drive is completely oblivious to any UMD, unless its on auto boot and the it just locks up the XMB.

So im starting to think its a motherboard issue.

Thanks.

With game UMDs I didn't get any loading screens either, but when I inserted an UMD into the drive I could see the 3 loading rings in the down right corner.

Yeah I wasn't getting any visual queues, the psp would right out ignore any umd.

But it turns out the UMD drive i installed was fully functional, and its the motherboard thats causing the issue.

I just removed the drive altogether.
Its lighter and doesn't constantly spin and click.

Thanks for all your help.
