Hey guys,

Just looking for some advice here. No problems... yet. :-)

On Wednesday, I am switching internet and upgrading connection speed (from 3 meg to 8 meg) and in the process I thought it best to get a new router as the one I have now is an old Netgear (I'm talking 8 year old-old). So it's time anyway.

We have very little in the way of Tech stores here... Staples is really it. So I am looking at what would be the best router option(s) for me.

I need a router that can connected to 2 wired computers, my wired Xbox, and a wireless laptop.

The guy at Staples recommended a Belkin Play router, but looking at the reviews for that on Amazon are not good at all (32 reviews totaling 2.5 stars). I was also looking at a Lynscys 2000.

Admittedly, I know very little about what the best router is, but I do know that some routers don't get along with the Xbox very well. So I want to do some good research before I get one. So I was looking for some ideas.

If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

Well, I guess I would like to keep it in the $100 or so range if I could. But, I also want quality and something that will give me the best preformance. So, I'm open to all suggestions. :-)

I'm in Chicago using Comcast and a networked printer with no problems other than having to reset the router every 3 weeks or so.

Thanks for the tips, and suggestions guys.

You certainly helped me narrow done my options and what to look for.

Demon - I may just go with the router you have. That way I can be good to go for a long time. Question though, how hard is it to set up? What I mean is I know just enough about computers to get myself in trouble. Somewhat tech savy, but not overly much. Do you think an average joe would be able to set up everything and be good to go.

Thanks again for the help.

Routers are easy to setup, you just need to configure your username and password in the web interface and your good to go. You may need to put in some other settings also, where do you live and what ISP are you with and Ill tell you the other settings you need.

actually mike it has two set-ups on the main page when you get into the router that let you do both of those lol. one is automatic just select your time zone other is fairly easy. Just remember one thing about this router. It can do almost anything you want it to. even bridge multiple networks coming in with specific ports. shows you mac addresses and IPs of everything connected including xboxes but dont give them names. when you look into the setup of this router you will see exactly how well it works. Only time i see an issue is when you get a cheap comcast modem that is not very dynamic with its IP address. you got to search out the IP and let it into the network but this can be done easily with the tools on the router. Yes IP filtering and Mac filtering. even filters packets from specific games and gives them the higher priority should you choose to set it up that way. This router to me is highly reccomended to any one with a network.

Sounds like a nice router, TBH i have only ever worked with the cheap uns (Thomson 585, netgear dg834, linksys 600 serios, dlink, belikin etc). Would like a nice router myself but the cost far outweighs the benefits for me.
