So, I finally gave in to my son's requests to get him a 360. Now comes the part for modding. I have modded PS2's, PS3's, Wii's, PSP's, etc., but never a 360. I have done a ton of searching on Google, and have came to the same conclusion every time. It seems as if the information I'm looking at is out-dated.

Now, for the good news. I think that those outdated guides and tuts might be able to help considering I purchased a used X-Box. Now, I have done a ton of searches here, and on other sites, and am quite overwhelmed at all the differences between kernel versions, dvd drives, etc. so I'll go ahead and post the n00b questions and get those out of the way.

First, all I'm looking to do is play backups. I'm not interested in running homebrew, custom dashboards, etc. I do know that in order to do this, I have to flash my DVD drive, and pray for the best. So, without further adieu, here it is:

Are there any updated guides on flashing a Hitachi drive? Or, will old guides work? Additionally, I'm sure that there are new software solutions to help the process and to mitigate bricking the drive, so if anyone could reccomend some, I'd appreciate it.

Now, to prove to everyone that I have done some research before asking the ultimate n00b question, here's what I found out so far. Hopefully I'm correct and the n00b question becomes a moot point.

1. I do not believe I can jtag since my kernel version is 2.0.8955.0

2. I currently have an on-board ICH10 SATA chipset on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3L MOBO. From what I have found, I do not need to utilize the famed VIA chipset, as the ICH10 seems to work.

3. I have the Hitachi GDR-3120L drive, although I am unsure as to what revision I have.

4. Now comes the tricky part. From what I understand, I will need to utilize the firmware toolbox and slax to perform the flash. That is easy enough

5. Now comes my main issue. The E64 error that I keep hearing about. From a majority of the guides that I have read, utilizing the xbox to power the DVD drive while flashing will produce this error, which could possibly have the xbox be banned. Is there a way around this without having to purchase additional accessories (i.e. connectivity kit).

Thanks in advance for getting me down the right path. All I need is this little kick, and I'll be good to go.

Alright, we might possibly be able to close this thread. After digging around a bit more, it looks like I can simply use Jungle Flasher to do everything for me. Not that I minded using DOS, but I do like automation a bit better. If I'm missing anything, feel free to still respond. Thanks!

I was gonna chime in and tell you that you seem to have a good understanding on flashing, but to change your step #4 to use Jungle Flasher, but you figured that out yourself.

SAVE YOUR KEY once you dump it. Even email it to yourself for safe keeping, because down the line you're gonna need it when that piece of crap Hitachi (aka Shitachi) craps out on you. More than likely you'll buy a BenQ drive to replace it and have to use Jungle Flasher to "spoof" the Shitachi's key into the BenQ (it's easy).

Now, I noticed that Hitachis have an issue with the laser strength, so I'm hoping that's what you're referring to. If it is, that's a simple adjustment of the POT. Otherwise, I might need to look into going ahead and purchasing one of these BENQ drives now so I have it on hand. Thanks for responding to the post. I was afraid I was going to be greeted with the generic "OMGWTFNOOBGTFO" response. My main priority was making sure I was heading in the right direction before I broke my son's xbox before he even got to play it.

Thanks Mike. Now I just need to track down my Torx set. I believe my 2 year old might have gotten her hands on it. I'll post back with how everything went tomorrow.

Yeah you did. lol. It's my license plate on my car too. Well, had a successful flash, but the drive isn't reading discs. The person who owned it before me had an issue with it as well, so it looks like a POT adjustment might be in order. But, for now... drinking commences.

I had a Hitachi LG that is still working well and has been used quite a bit since 2005. Anyway, if you install most of your games to the HD, you should get a long time out of it.

Just gonna add my thoughts to this. I also just flashed my drive yesterday (BENQ), no problems til I tried to burn a game, it gave errors. The first time I burnt it, I used MagicISO and max speed.

Then I burnt again, using CloneCD and minimum speed (1000Kbps ish) and it played fine. Maybe try this?
