Just installed a NEC 2500A which was a replacement for a HP 300i.
Great burner. burns Imation disc rated 4x at 6x with no errors.
Also great on cheaper disc that I have tried.
No errors or coasters yet.
You can get it for 79.00 by searching the web. I got mine for 89.00 about a month ago.
Burns 8x disc also.
Firmware out there to hack to DL.
By the way DL disc are out have not tried one yet.

Maxtor 80 GB and WD 80 GB (used for movies only)

321sucker, That Lite-on drive looks pretty good but you can get a Pioneer A-07 from newegg for $95.00.
I always recommend using quality media like the Verbatim and Ritek you mentioned, cheap media can be defective and no burner will burn it.
BTW Verbatim DL media will be shipping June 30th from:

$5.00 ea is less than I thought.

For low bucks I'd go with the Lite-on but if dollars aren't an issue then its the Plextor PX-712.

Yes 321 but when I go to Newegg I can't help but shop around. It makes me happy and my wife nervous. In fact while following this thread I gave in and ordered a new Plextor PX-712A. I just couldn't wait for Plextor to release a dual layer verison.

I spent a month if not more figuring out which burner to buy. Eventually went for the 107 over the NEC drive because of lots of posts regarding its problems with lots of media. Not one problem with the pioneer using shrink and Nero. Take it from a normal Joe Punter who doesnt care if a DVD takes 3.9 seconds longer to burn buy the Pioneer and let the sad tech heads argue about the rest

This "sad tech head" usually recommends lower priced units for most people. There are a few of us however, who are willing to spend the extra dollars for a quality drive with unique features. I like the idea of burning 4X media at 8X or 8X at 12X, or creating password protected copies. But that's just me an perhaps a few others, but I also realize that most people just want to keep simple and affordable.

Oh yes let the tech argue, but who do you run to when you need an answer?
Lets try and remain positive.
I've worked for a DVD software company and we ran test on various dvd burners and found that for the dollar, LITEON cant be beat.
They offer the most for the least and pass or surpass most of the more expensive burners.
They have little to no issues with media compatility and the company offers great support.
Most of the companies out there brand there name on liteon burners.
Why pay for a SUV when a BMW sedan will get u there as niceley while burning less gas.ie; (CASH).

My point was that its easy to be baffled by all the technical stuff ( I was) especially when firmware fixes most issues any way

How true, but if it weren't for baffled people we wouldn't have a forum. How right you are, a good firmware update has often provided me with a cure to annoying little problems and often with the ability to modify my burners. If you follow the link that I provided in my previous post, you might understand why some of us spend the extra dollars on a burner. Sure I could have made do with a Lite-on, NEC, or Pioneer for half the price but I wouldn't be able forget all the extras I would have missed.

I would sell and grab a affordable Lite-ON(Lite-ON LDW 411S\811S\851S\812S) m8. If you have the extra buckaroos then grab a Plextor PX-708A\712A. Are you looking for speed or size. For speed I would recommend the Western Digital 70 gig raptor. A fast hard disk that is also big enough for doing back ups. For size any large 7200 RPM disks preferably with 8 meg buffers. Western Digital special edition disks are pretty good. Go have a look at www.newegg.com
