My Sons PSPUMD just stopped & Logo disappeared, he?s autistic so he may just have pressed something who knows!! We havent done any updates recently either.
I have tried rebooting & going into configuration then clicking on UMD to make it show sony np9660. When the disc is inserted it spins & if I hold it to my ear I can hear it hum. But alas no game The PSP system software is 3.52 M33.
Can any one Help? Many thanks

Select the device and make it show UMD - UMD plays UMD's,any other setting and it will not read from the UMD
Actually, that is not true. It doesn't care at all what driver you select, if you insert an UMD you can play it, if you haven't disabled autostart it will even start automatically.
The problem described above sounds more like a dead laser to me. Did your son maybe drop the PSP? It's not shock resist, so even drops from low heights may kill the laser.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

It's repairable. I don't know how to do it, but a quick Google will bring up plenty of tutorials on it. DealExtreme sell the laser modules for just short of $15 with free shipping.

If your PSP is a 2000/Slim, you can buy one off dealextreme:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11471 The ones for the 1000/phat are out of stock permanently there.
There are some youtube videos on how to change an UMD drive, watch them first and check if you feel confident enough to do it. If you don't, sell the PSP on ebay and buy a used functional one. A 1000 or even a 2000 should be somewhere between 50 and 70 US$.
I actually changed the drive on my slim and if you don't feel comfortable to do so don't.
