When i plug in my ethernet cable in the back of my playstation 3 from the back of the router and then try and sign in, it keeps on saying that it cannot connect to the ethernet cable. been working fine up untill now i have tryed internet connection settings and keep getting this

Make sure the cable is tight at both ends; even if the clip still works, the cable might be loose.
Try the cable with a PC, but plugged into the same port on the router. If it works, then you know the issue is with the PS3...but let's hope it is the cable or the router, as they are worth less than a PS3.
So the same cable on the same port lets a PC connect to the internet? If so, do a visual inspection of the port on the PS3 to make sure there are no bent pins...if they all look OK, that is very bad news.

Sounds very bad. I guess you could try resetting all the settings, or maybe even doing a full system format...or maybe even the "overkill" format where you take out the drive and format it with a PC, then reinstall it in the PS3 and do a clean install of GameOS. If I were in your shoes, I would try all of these things...if it still didn't work, I would just use WiFi...clearly LAN isn't going to work.
